THE NEW HOME FOR THE WHITE DOG!!!!!
The breeding program at Sweetgum Kennels is geared towards breeding the ultimate field trial English Pointer. This type of dog will have a great nose, excellent confirmation, build, style, class, endurance and eye-appeal. The dog will be of superior intelligence and hunt for the master......Basically, the type of birddog everyone wants. Yes, we know this sounds great and wonderful and very desirable, but as anyone knows who has bred or raised birddogs, this is not always the result. At Sweetgum Kennels, the breeding program has switched from the famous Elhew bloodlines to the Miller - "White Dog" bloodlines. Why you may ask, because they are generally superior in every way when compared against the rest. Simply put, THEY WIN!!!! They generally excel at all levels of field trial competition: NSTRA, NBHA, Horseback, and All-Age.
When a "WHITE DOG" is released, one cannot help but pay more attention to the dog because of the eye-catching appeal the dog has when making a cast around an edge. They are easily seen and observed by handler, gallery, and most importantly, THE JUDGES. If a judge cannot see the dog, he cannot judge the dog.
I have found in my many endeavors with puppies and adult dogs, that the white dog generally adapts to a person more readily than other bloodlines I have experimented with at the kennel. The white dog sometimes bonds so closely with the handler-trainer that they become "one-man dogs" so to speak. It is much easier to train and handle a dog that is bonded to you than one that is not.
Don't get me wrong. I am not saying that a dog has to be only solid white with a few ticks scattered around on its ears to be a good dog. I am saying the bloodline that it is from is what makes it this way. Such as Miller's - Chief; True Spirit; Silver Buller; Excel; White Diamond; or Lester's Silver Chief, Whippoorwill Wild Card, House's Rain Cloud, White Knight's Button, Dog Outta Arkansas, or Riggin's White Knight to name a few of the more well known "WHITE DOGS". My favorite bitch for instance is a grand-daughter of Nat. CH The Hitch Hiker on the Dam's side and is liver and white. But her sire is out of CH Miller's Chief.
To finally get off of my soap box, the bloodline of Sweetgum Kennels is going to be that of the WHITE DOGS. Different people, check that , all people like different things in dogs. However, when you get down to the basics, the only thing that separates what one person wants in an ultimate birddog from what another person wants is range and color (markings). Everything else about the dog will be the same: classy, strong nose, good confirmation, and A WINNER. Here at Sweetgum Kennels, I plan to let the range take its own course and me try to deal with the rest...class, nose, confirmation, style, and WINNING with WHITE DOGS!!!
