Slavery
Slavery, the use of people by other people for hard labor, has occurred all over the world for millions of years. However, the only type of slavery that occurred in the United States of America is the owning of African Americans by Caucasians. What was slavery like for most slaves? What was slavery like for Harrison and Samuel? How would you feel if you were a slave? Visit the resources on slavery for more information.

The Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was a series of paths, which the escaping slaves followed on their way to slavery. They often stopped at way stations, where other people, both African-American and Caucasian, helped them. What was the Underground Railroad like for escaping slaves? What was it like for Harrison and Samuel? How would you feel if you were an escaping slave on the Underground Railroad?
|
|
Fugitive Slave Law
The Fugitive Slave Law was passed in 1850. It made it legal for a person in a free state to return a freed slave to his or her owner for a reward. Therefore, it made it impossible for an escaped slave to be guaranteed freedom unless he escaped across the country borders into Canada. How did the Fugitive Slave Law affect slavery, abolitionists, and the Underground Railroad? How did it affect Harrison and Samuel? How would you feel if you were a slave that escaped to a free state, but your newly found freedom was a risk because of the Fugitive Slave Law?

Abolition
Abolition was the movement that occurred in the early to mid 1800’s that was one of the causes of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. Abolitionists opposed slavery and wanted to see it end. What did abolitionists do? How did abolitionists help Harrison and Samuel? What would you do if you were an abolitionist? Write in your journal and visit the resources on abolition for more information.
