Coastal Navigation
Captain Bob's E-mail navigation course will prepare you to navigate the Maine Coast safely. If you can do that, you can navigate any coast without problems.
Coastal Navigation is a necessary requirement for safe boating on any coast. GPS and Chartplotters are good systems for confirming your navigation plots but should never replace them.

This home study course will provide you all you need to know for safe , coastal navigation whether or not  your electronics are working properly.
DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS? Captain Bob will try to answer them.
What do I need to home study this navigation course?
You need a good , easily understood textbook, a chart for plotting, parallel rules or a plotter, dividers, chart one and sufficient self discipline to study and progress through the text problems. In addition, you may need assistance if you have trouble with some of the problems.
 Dividers & Parallel Rules

Who's this guy Captain Bob?
He's a former General Electric Manager who started Sawyer's Sailing School fifteen years ago after obtaining his Coast Guard Captain's license and American Sailing Association (ASA) instructor certification. He's been teaching this Coastal Navigation Course at the local college during winters for the past twelve years.

How do I know that I can trust him if I send my money for the course?
You don't. However, you can check the ASA web page at www.ASA.com and see if Sawyer's Sailing School is listed and check his web page at www.sail2ME.com.

Will this course prepare me for ASA Coastal Navigation Certification?
Yes, that's why Capt. Bob wrote the texbook. If you can complete the cruise problems at the end of the text satisfactorily, you can pass the ASA exam. The exam needs to be taken at an ASA certified school and an additional fee of about $30 will be involved. Sawyer's Sailing School furnishes a certificate after successful completion, but it doesn't carry the national recognition that the ASA certification does.
