The US Department of Defense, through various Defense Contractors (such as Lockheed, General Atomics, Northrop Grumman,Sikorsky, etc.), has researched, developed and test-flown a wide variety of remotely-controlled aerial platforms since the mid 80's. They came to be known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles ( UAVs ). Later on, weapons integrated UAVs came to be known as Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles ( UCAVs ). The research, development and testing continues today at various classified test facilities and proving grounds, such as at AREA 51

1990 Photo of UAV test-flown over Area 51?
Photo taken by Gary Schultz (a former colleague of Norio Hayakawa of the Civilian Intelligence Network) on Wednesday, February 28, 1990, just south of Hwy 375, Nevada, on "Mail Box Rd", looking due South towards the Jumbled Hills and Groom Mountains.
Object appeared to be an orangish light in the distance.
Upon development and enlargement, dome and general shape became apparent.
