Ashtanga Yoga presents a flow of poses that heat the body to safely stretch and strengthen, and bolster fitness, with an accent on the soothing breath. It is a wonderfully systematic discipline to benefit the body and calm the mind.
Here are the classes offered, including who they are appropriate for:
LEVEL I
This class has an opening segment (a half hour) of instruction and warmup, than an hour of Ashtanga Yoga. Many students find this just the right level for maintaining flexibility, strength, and building the soothing breath. Beginning students and newcomers are introduced to the practice here, and are given modifications that allow them to do all poses. More experienced students often drop in to focus on the foundations of their practice.
BASICS
This is a six class cycle that introduces the Ashtanga poses in detail. It's an opportunity for beginners to ease into Ashtanga and experienced students to refine their poses. This is an hour-long class focusing on how to do the poses with good alignment. As each class is a complete and balanced practice, you can enter any time in the cycle and you may take individual classes.
LEVEL III
Students in this class go through the Second Series of Ashtanga Yoga, which builds on the Primary Series and offers more advanced poses. Modifications are presented so students can work their way up to the final poses. Open to Level II students or by instructor permission.
LEVEL II
This class offers a full 90 minutes of Ashtanga Yoga, the entire Primary Series as it is called. Prior yoga experience or a high level of fitness is recommended. Modifications are presented on the more difficult poses so they are accessible to all students. New students are encouraged to take breaks when needed, and build flexibility, strength, breathing, endurance, and posture over time.
FLOW
A fun Ashtanga alternative for Level I, II, and III students or those experienced in vinyasa flow yoga. Play outside the traditional order of postures for an invigorating workout, where the instructor presents an eclectic blend of poses, Ashtanga and other, in a vinyasa flow. Different every week.
