The Flame Nebula - NGC 2024
NGC 2024 -  The Flame is an emission nebula, which lies just east of the third star in Orion's belt (Zeta Orionis or Alnitak - meaning "the girdle"). This bright 1.8 magnitude star presents a challenge when viewing or imaging the Flame nebula. Visually an O-III filter will significantly enhance detail, as will placing Zeta Orionis just out of the field of vision.

Telescope: Meade 10" LX200 GPS f/10 at with Meade 3.3 focal reducer at f/3.3

CCD Camera: Starlight Xpress MX7c single shot color camera

Image: Total of 18 minutes of exposure acquired with AstroArt. 2 - 5 minute S2K self-guided exposures (total minutes actual exposure time) and 19 - 45 second unguided exposures.Stacked and processed in AstroArt, with final color processing in Photoshop.

Location: November 07. 2002 - Clear dark 5.5 magnitude skies at Fort Griffin State Park 150 miles west of Fort Worth Texas. Temperature - 58 depress F. Low humidity, but very windy with gusts up to 40 mph. I had to stake down the tripod to keep it from blowing over. The two longer guides were taken during a brief lull.
