Attwood Elementary School was constructed in 1965 and named after Joseph
F. Attwood. One of Mr. Attwood's greatest interests was education. In 1942
he was appointed to the North School District Board of Education and continued
to serve on that board until 1960, including many years as secretary for
the board. In 1961, the North School District was annexed by the Lansing
School District.
In 1964, the Lansing School District approved construction of a new
elementary school in the southern portion of the city and decided to name
it after Mr. Attwood. It was a fitting tribute to a man who had devoted
so much time and energy to the school district and who helped to form the
educational system of today.
In addition to serving on the school board, Mr. Attwood was a former
businessman and long-time employee of the U.S. Postal Service, including
one year (1961) as Lansing's Postmaster.
