Oxford, Mathew Arnold's city of dreaming spires, is the ideal base for visitors to explore or
learn more about the history of the university and city perhaps at the fascinating
Oxford Story exhibition in Broad Street. In the
summer you can try your hand at punting on the river where Lewis Carrol first told
his story of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". If you prefer, you can also wander around the
city where so many scenes from Evelyn Waugh'sBrideshead Revisited were filmed
There is so much to see in this beautiful city that regularly wins the Britain in Bloom
competition and holds the silver award from the Entente Florale European contest. Oxford
city centre and main shopping area are easilly reached by car but we would recommend
using the fast regular bus service or even hiring a bike. Younger family members may also wish to
visit Christchurch College and School which they will recognise as being the location for some of the
scenes in the "Harry Potter" films.
Further afield we particularly recommend a visit to Woodstock
and Blenheim Palace or further on to Stratford-upon-Avon, William
Shakespeare's birth place. London and the West End is less than an hour away by car or using
the excellent frequent coach service, details of which can be found on
either www.oxfordbus.co.uk or
www.stagecoach-oxford.co.uk/oxfordtube. Connections to London's major
airports Heathrow and Gatwick can also be made using the
Oxford Bus Company's service
which runs directly from the airport terminals to the centre of Oxford. For more information, please
