GREG JOHNSON - BASSPLAYER
THANKS FOR VISITING MY SITE
I specialize in fretless bass.  The fretless allows me to add subtle embellishments in the bass line to enhance the music while still in "the pocket".  The choice bassists must make is what notes to play, how the notes are played, and when to play them at the right time and "feel". This is my wonderful world of taste, support, grooving, and soloing. During my long career playing bass, I've been asked to go from "deep in the pocket" to "what pocket?" I offer a good ear, professionalism, most styles,an understanding the Nashville number system, vocals, and a firm commitment to your project.  My influences are James Jamerson, Duck Dunn, Chuck Rainey,Leland Sklar,Jaco,Victor Wooten,Bob Babbitt,Bootsy Collins, and I am a humble student of all the great bassists not listed.

my bio-hazard
I started playing bass in 1965 in Europe with a Hofner "Beatle" bass. I learned the songs from Motown, Stax, and all the soul artists on Atlantic records.I played in garage bands doing the songs of the Beatles,Rolling Stones,Hollies, every protest song released.  After moving to Montgomery Alabama in 1969, I joined  the black group the Soul Twisters, who along with the Commodores, played the club and "Chitlin" circuits in the south.  I was one of  the first white players in a all-black group in the city. I remember we had to stay in someones house while on the road because no motel or hotel was available for "mixed" groups.
I began to play country music with ex-Hank Willims band members in local bars and taverns. I began to appreciate chicken wire!! and country music.
While serving in the U.S.Army, I played in bands at he Officers' and NCO's clubs. I also played in local bands while in college in Alabama after my hitch.
I arrived in Nashville in the summer of 1981 as a writer and spent 2 years living on music row. I had 4 songs published, but no hits.  I briefly worked for "Cowboy" Jack Clement as a gofer. I made all the rounds on Lower Broad playing bass and have managed to keep busy ever since, playing all styles from rock, country, funk, soul, jazz, r+b, and vocals.
I have helped open shows for B.B.King, Little Milton, Mark Collie, Molley Hatchet,Foghat,David Ball, The Outlaws,The Wilburn brothers,Davis Daniel,Earl Thomas Conley,Bama Band,David Allan Coe,Webb Wilder,Johnny Paycheck, Jacky Ward,Black Oak Arkansas,Blackfoot, and Humble Pie.   I worked with legendary songwriter Joe Melson ( Blue Bayou, Crying, Only the Lonely, Blue Angel ) at the 2006 Rock-a-Billy Festival in Jackson, Tn.
