Station 91 Fire Explore
Post 2191 Since September of 1991 the
Barrington Fire Company has had an active Fire Explorer Post.
What is a Fire Explorer?
Fire Explorers are young men and women ages 14 - 18, who
are in high school. These young men and women get a chance to learn what it is like to be
a firefighter. Explorers participate in drills, attend training classes, take part in fire
prevention activities, and get a chance to give something back to the community. Explorer
Posts are a division of the Boy Scouts of America, and all explorers are cover by
insurance and closely watched as they learn the ropes around the fire station.
Many of our original fire explores from 1991 have gone
on to become officers in the fire company, and also gone on to carreers in the emergency
services. Deputy Chief Willson, Captain Houck, Lt. Rettinger, Engineer Preen, and Engineer
Sharp all came out of our explorer program. Some of the carreers that our explorers have
gone on to pursue include, police officer, career firefighter, and United States Air Force
Airman.
In May 1999 at the Camden County Fire Chiefs Memorial
and Awards Ceremony six members of Station 91 were awarded a Engine Company Unit Citation
for Heroic Efforts at a house fire in November of 1998. The six members; Andy Willson,
Rick Rettinger, Jason Houck, Gary Hawkins, Joe Preen, and Chris Meddings, were all former
members of the fire explorers post at Station 91.
