I just replaced the emergency brake cable in my BJ 7. I was able to reach some of the workings at the end of the
lever by taking off the trans tunnel cover , but still couldn't reach the forward bracket holding the cable. I couldn't reach anything from underneath. So, I consulted my son who is a "real" mechanic. He got it up on a lift (a great move for working under a Healey), studied the problem, and decided to detach the drive shaft at the rear (easier than I thought it would be). He was able to push up the drive shaft enough to gain easy access to the "works" at the bottom of the brake handle and the bracket. He had the
new cable installed & drive shaft reconnected in about 10 minutes.
I had already spent over an hour taking the trans tunnel off and removing carpeting. Doing it his way avoids disturbing the trans tunnel cover and upholstery. One of those "why didn't I think of that" situations. Larry Wysocki HML
