Chloes Tragic Story
Chloe's Tragic Life
UPDATE:  On 11/07/06 Chloe passed away with the assistance of Dr Teri Schweiss.  We had Chloe's favorite white blankets laid out on the living room floor for her  to lie on.  We had scented  candles lit and soft music playing in the background.  Chloe's toys surrounded her and she  nestled her teddy bear in her front legs.  She looked at us with understanding as she slipped away.   We encouraged her to go with love and kisses and it truly was a gentle passing.  I have Dr  Schweiss  to thank for that.  She came to my home and that made all the difference in the world.

Our hearts are broken...........

Chloe's story begins with a Nebraska police department finding Chloe running in the country.  They contacted a local rescue ANGEL to take her, and thank goodness she did.  Chloe was suffering from one of the worst cases of Demodectic Mange that many of us have seen.

We learned that Chloe belonged to a family that was going through divorce.  The husband wanted her to go to the farm to be with  the kids, so the wife let her go.  Allegedly, the father-in-law decided they didn't want to deal with her illness, so she was dumped in the country.

Chloe was only six months old when she came to Black Hills Boxer Rescue.  We fought hard to beat the Demodex, and eventually did.  What we didn't realize was that Chloe had an underlying renal condition.  What we thought to be Urinary Tract Infections, turned out to be full out Renal Failure.  We learned this as we were preparing Chloe for some extensive testing to see if she had a congenital problem with her ureters.  The blood work came back that her kidneys were non-functioning and there was nothing we could do but to care for her and let her live out the life she had left.

At the time of her diagnosis Chloe appeared to be a healthy, active two year old.  We would have never dreamed that this little girl was actually dying.

We learned while Chloe was with us that the entire litter that Chloe was from, had severe Demodex.  Two of the pups that weren't sold were still living at the breeders house at the time we acquired Chloe.  We attempted to get the other two pups, but the Dept of Ag could only enforce that the breeders treat the pups.  To date, we do not know what happened to those two puppies.

Let's let Chloe's life be worth something.  Research your breeder before purchasing.  A reputable breeder would NEVER breed a female carrying Demodex.  All dogs that have had Demodex must be spay/neutered.  The females actually pass it on to the pups,  but once these dogs have had it, they have a compromised Immune System.  Hormones, stress, illness etc, could cause a relapse.  With all the boxers in need of homes throughout the US, we do not need additonal boxers bred unless you are showing, testing and guaranteeing against congenital health and temperament problems.
On July 21, 2006, my dearest lifelong friend died unexpectedly at 45 years of age.  I built a  website as a tribute to Jean Schroeder-Malin and a source of healing for those that love her.
