44 CHARLIE TOLAR HB Houston Oilers 1960-66  5'7"  200  Northwest Louisiana  Age 24:
Charlie Tolar was one of my favorite Oiler players. I can still see him huddled up with his teamates and myself wondering how a guy so short and stocky could be so good. 1962 was Charlie's best season. Blanda was having an off-year (interceptions), Cannon was injured (back), as was split end Bill Groman (knee). Tolar was the club's MVP as he led them to the 1962 Eastern Division crown.
Charlie Tolar was an oilfield firefighter in the off-season. When he retired in 1966, Charlie was the Oilers all-time rusher with 3,288 yards in 908 carries. By the end of the AFL in 1969, Tolar was still the club leader.
Pop Ivy was Houston's head coach in 1962- the club's third in three years. It was the first year the Oilers wore large white numbers on the back of their helmets. These numbers are 1.5" white Helvetica.
