31  BILL MATHIS  FB  New York Jets 1963-69  6'1"  220  Clemson  Age 24:
Many old AFL fans remember Bill Mathis for his crewcut. But they also remember Bill played in the 1963 American Football League All-Star game as well. He was named to the All-AFL team in 1961 after carrying the ball a league-high 202 times and rushing for 846 yards, good for second in the league. Mathis played in the 1968 AFL championship game and Super Bowl III. He also played every AFL season, all with the New York Titans / New York Jets. Seventh on the league's all-time rushing list.
This was the first year of Sonny Werblin and the green and white-clad New York Jets. The jetplane logo was better than nothing.
Other Jets who wore this helmet and played in the 1963 All-Star game include Mathis, linebacker Larry Grantham, and split end Bake Turner.
