22 KEITH LINCOLN HB San Diego Chargers 1960-66, 1968  6'2"  215  Washington State  Age 27:
As with most American Football League clubs in 1966, the year was the last one for many of the early star players. Nineteen sixty-six was Keith Lincoln's last in Charger blue for two years - he would return in 1968 after having been traded to Buffalo for the 1967 season. By then, both this helmet and Balboa Stadium were history. A fast and powerful runner, Keith was also a good pass receiver ( a requirement under Sid Gillman). Played in four league title games. Had legendary stats in the 1963 title game when he rushed for 206 yards in 13 carries. MVP in the 1963 and 1964 All-Star games. Member Chargers Hall of Fame.
The blue bolts were previously used in 1960 when the team was based in Los Angeles. At lease he retained the classic numbers. (But he would again destroy the classic Charger look in the mid-1970s when he dropped the helmet numbers, changed both the helmet color to blue and lightning bolts to stripes on the Charger pants
The Chargers used to be my favorite team. New majority owner Gene Klein was responsible for changing the classic San Diego Charger uniform. Klein brought back the blue helmet bolts from 1960 and changed the color of their pants from white to gold. The beginning of the end for the legendary AFL Chargers.
The back of the 1966 Charger helmet. Back bumper has been removed and excess glue stripped. Nineteen sixty-six was the Chargers last season in Balboa Stadium. The Chargers won four division crowns during their six year stay at Balboa.
Keith Lincoln's away jersey circa 1966. Note the gold trim is missing from the numbers and the lightning bolt is white with gold trim instead of gold with white trim.
