"Gone-To-Seed"
In May 2005 I was scanning some lilacs with the quite predictable result- nice, yaaaaaawn... too bad I can't scan the fragrance! The biggest reason I prefer home-grown and native species to buying "perfect" clean bouquets from the florist is that I can capture some surprizing and unlikely combinations. In my garden the kale had made it through the winter, then bolted in the spring with phlox-like delicate yellow flowers. They made a lovely bouquet mixed with exotic vermillion poppies and deep purple lilac...a bit too early for the iris today. I brightened the lilac spray with a couple sprigs of kale. The dandelions had just gone-to-seed too, so I added some extra interest with a few seed globes. A cabbage white fluttered by and then I realized that I just had to have one in my arrangement! Last year I had found one of those little fellas captured in a spider web. Before he could be wrapped up for dinner, I unleashed him from the web and made a few scans. I incorporated his portrait in my new "Gone-To-Seed" composition.
