Barn Door Fencers Club is named in honor of Meistro Joseph E. Pechinsky whose favorite expression is "BARN DOOR," to express great happiness and also to express great frustration at times.  The instruction at this fencing club is based on the Pechinsky method.  The world of fencing is a far better place for the influence of this master of the sword who sent many students to college on fencing scholarships, to junior worlds and senior world championships, Olympics and Pan American Games and produced many National Champions over a coaching career which began in the mid 1960's.  THANK YOU JOE.

Barn Door Fencers Club athletes have been working their way up the fencing ladder in a steady climb to the top.  In the fall of 2003 BDFC was born created by Cathy McClellan for the sole purpose of creating fencers that Cathy could fence with.  In the process, those new fencers have in 3 short years achieved amazing results.  Jonathan J. won a national medal at his first National Championship, 3rd pace, in the Y-12 epee in June 2006.  Daniel R. won an adult "U" foil compeition in his first year of compeition in Jan. 2006 winning a "D" rating.  Now Jonathan is Nationally ranked in Y14 foil and epee in the top ten and has earned a "B" in foil and a "C" in epee to date.  Daniel as proved his potential by beeing ranked #1 seed  in the D.E. tableau in a Div III Circuit last fall resulting in a respectable 17th out of 123 competitors.  He recently won a C1 event earning his "C" in foil and less than a month later placed 3rd in a B2 epee event earning his "C" in epee.  Jonathan and Daniel are only 15 years old.  They are still leaning how to win but learning well.
RATINGS The rating system in US Fencing is U, E, D, C, B, A. U = unclassified (no rating), E is the lowest letter rating and A is the highest.  Ratings are earned depending on the fencer's placement in tournaments and the level of rating is determined by the strength of the tournament.  BDFC fencers have been progressively earning their fencing ratings and continue to improve and strive to increase their fencing skills.  Ratings come as a byproduct of their hard work and perseverence.

Cathy McClellan was elected for induction to the US Fencing Hall of Fame. She will be inducted at Nationals in San Jose, CA in 2008.
1/27/07 at the Noreaster Open in Andover, NH Daniel R. (15) competed in foil and epee and had strong performances in both weapons.  He placed 3rd in each event and re-earned his "C" rating in foil and earned a new "C" rating in epee.  His epee elevated to a precise confident level and with more experience he will keep advancing.  14 year old Byron G. also competed in epee.  His frist tournament in 2 years and posted a respectable 3 victories and 3 defeats in preliminary round and came close to winning his first direct elimination match.  Congratulations Byron.  On the same day, Jonathan J. (15) competed in foil and epee in Waltham, MA at the Beanpot Open.  He had a strong performance in foil placing 8th in an A-1 event.  His epee faltered a little but still had a respectable result in the top 16.
1/5//08 and 1/6/08 Jonathan J. (14) competed in the Sword in the Snow tournament in foil and epee.  This is a national Super Regional event for 14 and under aged competitors which earns points toward a national standing. Jonathan was ranked 8th in epee and 21 in foil nationally prior to this event. With great determination and skill Jonathan defeated all fencers he met until he got to the final match of each event.  There were fencers from as far away as Colorado and Texas competing.  The final matches were well fought and victory was within his grasp but he fell short to two more experienced, excellent fencers.  Jonathan's skill was equal but not his experience.  He placed 2nd in each event, an amazing achievement by itself as there are not too many fencers competing at such a high level in two different weapons. These results will boost his national standing.
Daniel R. won in a decisive mannor the U-17 JO qualifier 12/30/07 going undefeated and only getting hit 12 times.  The event had 17 competitors and was a C-1 event earning Daniel a new "C" rating.  Way to go Daniel!
12/15/07 Jonathan (14) qualified for the Junior Olympic National Championships for boys 20 years old and under, in foil to be held in Charlotte, NC in February 2008.  He placed 4th at the qualifier where 4 fencers were to qualify.  Jonathan is an automatic qualifyer for the U-17 Cadet Championships in foil and epee also to be held in Charlotte, NC.  Currently he is 8th in epee Y-14 National point standings and 21st in Y-14 foil.
Congratulations to Jonathan for winning the Turkey Stab (A B-1 event) in CT and earning his "B" rating in foil on 11/25/07.  The day before in Waltham,  MA Jonathan fenced in the Turkey Day event in Epee and Foil.  He was eliminated early in Epee but went much farther in foil and placed 6th in an A-1 event.  An amazing performance for this up and comer.
Daniel R. had an amazing performance placing 16th out of 47 in the Turkey Day event on 11/24/07 in Waltham, MA which was an A-1 event after not having practiced for 3 weeks.
12/2/07 found BDFC fencers Coach Cathy, Jonathan J. and Daniel R. competing in the Maine State Open.  All competed in mixed foil, and A-1 event.  Daniel had the highest result of all three with 9th re-earning his "D", Jonathan was 10th and Cathy was  29th out of 47 competitors.  Cathy also competed in the Women's Foil Open and placed 3rd earning a "D" rating.  Jonathan and Daniel also competed in Epee.
The second appearance at a Nationals, 2007, again proved very productive for BDFC fencers.  Daniel and Jonathan competed in Cadet foil placing in the middle of a very large field of 147 fencers.  Daniel and Jonathan also competed in Div III foil and had their best showing with Jonathan placing 15th and Daniel placing 25th in a field of 138 fencers.  Jonathan also competed in the Y14 epee and placed 16th earning Y14 points and competed in Y14 foil.
BDFC's newest competitor is an 11 year old girl.  Victoria H. competed in her first foil competition 5/12/07 in a Y14 placing 10th out of 12.  On 5/19/07 she placed 4th out of 5 in a Y12 foil.
BDFC made history on 11/18/06 by fielding its first competitive team. BDFC with a young team (a 14 and a 13 year old) plus a veteran fencer, won the team foil competition.   An amazing result considering the relative inexperience and age of two of the BDFC fencers.  To come away with a win in our first ever team event is surprising and fantastic and I hope an omen of things to come.

Jonathan J. came home from Columbus, OH a winner on 3/6/06 after winning the RYC Arnold Schwartzenegger Classic Y-12 Epee and placing 2nd in the Y-12 Foil.  Jonathan's opponents were from OH, KY, PA, NY, and TX.  His fencing elevated a notch winning the epee using beautiful, classic epee technique.
In the Super Youth Regional Y14 at Danvers in April 2007 Jonathan J. placed 3rd and earned a "C" rating by beating a "B" fencer from RI on his way to the final.  Jonathan was behind 11 to 7 at the beginning of the 3rd period and found the toughness and drive to score 6 single light touches and sway the director in a double-light touch to win the match.  Jonathan outscored his opponent 8 to 2 in the 3rd period to win 15-13.  The next day Jonathan placed 7th in the epee but he came close to beating the eventual winner in his D.E. match which would have, again, earned him a "C" in epee.  But the more experienced fencer beat Jonathan and went on to win the tournament.
