Domestic Cat

Felis catus Linnaeus
The Domestic, or House, Cat, far from being endangered, is very numerous indeed as a result of its association with humans. Uncontrolled breeding, coupled with protection from natural predators, results in overpopulation which in its turn results in a high incidence of feral, or “stray” cats. These are especially vulnerable to diseases from which house cats are usually protected by veterinary care, and which, in some places, they communicate to the wild cats in the area. They and their kittens are also susceptible to starvation in severe weather conditions when prey is often very scarce.
It follows from this that the problem with this species is one of animal welfare, not conservation. Numerous organisations have been set up to care for, and find homes for unwanted cats and kittens and to alleviate the hardships suffered by feral cats and by domestic pets which become homeless or or subject to cruelty.

The Cat Survival Trust is unable to involve itself directly with domestic cat matters, but can often advise UK enquirers as to whom they should contact.

Area Clubs, Breed Societies, etc.

There are many local and regional cat clubs as well as societies specialising in particular breeds of cat.
For details of those we know about, visit our Club directory page.

Domestic Cat Rescue and Welfare Organisations

Many organisations and private individuals are involved in the rescue, rehoming and general welfare of domestic cats. Some of these are national or international in their scope, others operate in small, localised areas.
For details of those we know about, visit our Rescue directory page.

Other Domestic Cat Organisations

There are many National and other cat organisations throughout the world which do not fit either of the above lists. This directory lists some of them. Also listed is an Internet magazine for cat lovers - The Cat’s Eye.
