Cholpe House History

Our guest house was originally built in the late 1800's but not in it's present location.  It was the Louisa P. Hill house situated "two hills over" on family ground, about 3 miles from its current site.  In 1974, the house was raised and moved by truck to our hilltop by Thomas Mumford with the immediate intention of building a house for his daughter who is an artist.

The reason for the name "Cholpe" (pronounced: chaul-pee) is because the Mumfords' owned land in the Louisiana parish named Cholpe.  Tom & Tish decided to sell the Louisiana property and with the proceeds from that sale, move and remodel the house.  Cholpe House was moved to its present location and remodeled in 1973 &1974, and has been called by family members that name since that time.

Working Farm Activities/Products

Cholpe House is located on Mumford Farms which is managed by the youngest of the Mumford children.  It is a working farm producing corn, soybeans, wheat, milo and at various times, other specialty crops.  The 800 acre hilltop is surrounded by flat bottom ground where most of the row crop operation takes place.  In recent years, several irrigation pivots have been purchased to offset the risk of the sandier ground.  The farm maintains a large grain handling facility and small cattle operation.
