This picture was taken at a facility that tested child safety seats for compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. A common misuse scenario was re-created. This child safety seat is installed correctly, but the 'child' has 'buckled themself' into the restraint device. Children lack the strength and coordination to ensure proper securement of the buckle into the latchplate.

In this picture you see the catastrophic failure of the child restraint as the car is 'impacted' in a frontal collision at 30 miles per hour. As the harness was not secured properly, the child was projected forward and the head and neck were tangled in the harnessing. In a real-life scenario, this would have certainly resulted in the immediate death of the child.
