The
Purpose of Shotokan Karate
To quote the founder of present day karate, Master
Gichin Funakoshi: "The ultimate aim of the art of
Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the
perfection of character of its participants".
Karate, literally "empty hand", is a
weaponless martial art. It is founded on the basic
techniques of punching, striking, kicking, and blocking.
Shotokan Karate is not "sport" karate. It is a
traditional style tracing its history back to Master
Funokoshi, the father of modern karate, and beyond to
karate's Okinawan beginnings.
Shotokan Karate fosters the development of qualities
such as: coordination of mind and body, self-control,
mental discipline, respect for others, self-confidence,
courage, perseverance, courtesy, integrity, and humility.
It is also valued for the well-rounded development of
strength, coordination, agility, and self-defense.
