Rosemarie's parents emigrated from Stuttgart, West Germany to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1953.

John was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from Conrad High School in Wilmington, Delaware in 1953 and graduated from Purdue University with a B.S.C.E. in 1957. Rosemarie also attended Purdue from 1955-1957.


After graduation, John was employed by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company as a civil engineer. He served two years from 1958-1960 in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was discharged as a 1st Lt. He returned to the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company and in 1962 he was transferred to Rome, Italy where he remained until the fall of 1964. He was then transferred to London, England and later, in 1969, he was transferred to Rotterdam, Holland where he was the Construction Manager until 1973. He was then transferred to the Company Headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. In 1975, he was again transferred to the plant in Kankakee, Illinois. In 1976 they were residing in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
