There were no children to this marriage. Mrs. Kenyon was very instrumental in providing most of the family history of the Thomas Kenyon (162) branch, herein presented, up to the ninth generation. She also supplied much information on the Pardon Waterman Kenyon (16257) family. The notes of Mrs. kenyon were edited and arranged by Prof. John S. Kenyon (11611113).

John kenyon (116531) was interested in politics and was at one time, a senator from Richmond, Rhode Island, a member and president of its' town council for more than twenty years. Later, he was also a councilman in Hopkington.

In February 1877, they moved to Wyoming, Rhode Island.

During the Civil War, Mrs. Kenyon sewed flannel garments for the Union forces. It was about that time that she took an active interest in genealogy. In a few years, she had gathered quite a collection of information about the family history.

Mrs. Kenyon was born in Plainfield, Connecticut to David (16243) and Thankful (Barber) Kenyon. At an early age, she moved to West Greenfield, Rhode Island. At three and one half she attended her first school. Her parents had told the new town school teacher that she was four years old, and she was accepted.

At the age of 15, she completed her education, but was stricken ill, and a year later, when she regained her health, she returned to school for another term. She stated, "By that time I knew all there was for a girl to know".

In March of 1857, she married John Kenyon of Wyoming, Rhode Island. he was a civil engineer, familiarly known as "John L."

He surveyed and planned the layout of the Wood River Branch Railroad from Wood River Junction to Hope Valley, and was the first superintendent of the line. He also devoted a great deal of time to the Watch Hill and Westerly Railroad. He is also responsible for laying out and plotting many of the Westerly streets.

Mrs. Kenyon celebrated her 93rd birthday quietly, stating that "It is no longer an unusual event."

She was possibly the step-daughter of John Kenyon (12113). They took Betsey's brother, Simon Zelotus Kenyon (121122) and her sister Hannah (12112C), then 16 and 8, into their home. They owned a farm just west of John Kenyon (12113).

At the time his father moved to Connecticut, Wickes probably went to his Uncle Benjamin Kenyon () of McDonough. Benjamin's son Israel (121113) was only a year younger then Wickes. According to Clark W. Kenyon (121131), the two boys were soon in business together, "selling stoves about the country".

Clark Kenyon (121131) also stated that Wickes Kenyon was an able man and of good principles. When Wickes was about 23, in 1835, he went to Michigan and bought land. Later, coming back to his native state, he married Hannah. Then for a time, he ran a sawmill in McDonough. About 1850, he returned to Michigan and bought a farm in Sherwood, Branch County, where he died. On the farm was a lake similar to that of his brother William Henry Kenyon (121123).

After leaving Onondaga N.Y., he went to Union, N.Y. and married. About the time his brother Wickes went to Michigan, Simon did likewise, and settled in Corunna, Shiawassa County, about 60 mile northwest of Detroit. There he died.

For a while at Corunna, he dealt in horses, but was not a farmer. Then he worked in a sawmill, but was so unfortunate, he cut off a part of one of his heels. That made him permanently lame. While recovering from the wound, he fell in love with his nurse, and later married her as his second wife. For a time Simon, like Israel Kenyon (121113), studied law, but did not take a full course. He was however, able to do some law work, and had a desk in a law office.

Clark, his father's only son, lived all his life on the forty acres that his father willed him. When he was nine years old, his infant sister died, and ten years later, his sister Sarah, having borne a child, died also. Two years from then he saw his father buried. At 23, only his mother remained with him.

It was at this time he married his cousin Betsey Maria Kenyon (12112A). Soon afterwards they took her brother, Simon Zelotus Kenyon and her sister Hannah Kenyon into their home until they would be able to support themselves. Clark was gray haired by the age of 25.

Then when their oldest child was six, and their other one was four, both their grandmother, Thankful Hiscock Kenyon and their mother herself, Clark Wife's, passed away, only five months apart.

At the age of 31, Clark married Mary Allen. Her first child died at the age of three, but later a daughter was given the same name. In the late summer of 1868, Clark was a large white-haired, slow moving man, troubled with rheumatism, sometimes sitting in a chair, reading, but seldom speaking. By nature Clark Kenyon was agreeable and friendly to everyone. His many losses of relatives in his early life, not only saddened his outlook, but made him sensitive and sympathetic to the sorrows of others. Besides, the help he had given to his long line of children, had kept him young in sentiment and able to understand and drive away the troubles of his children - best done by directing them into more agreeable activities.

All the others of his family, had an extra allowance of the same good and kind qualities. Their way of looking at people, and of speaking, was often mildly humorous, as though, while seeing odd characteristics in people, they could still be charitable. The future, they saw as likely to bring good news to all. They seemed actuated by sincere friendliness and cordiality, and a winning hospitality. Clark was remembered as classifying all kenyons as "The Kinyon Tribe" and stated, in all the Kinyon tribe I have never seen a bad one, young or old."

While Clark was not an educated man, so called, he had a good knowledge of the men, institutions and work of his time and State. He studied the Onondaga Weekly Democrat, and was prepared to explain and defend most of his party's policies.

Assisted by his children, he was able to provide for his family on his forty acres of land. They had the necessities and many of the comforts of life, but few luxuries. And Clark kept out of dept. That was a handicap and drawback which he and the Kenyon Tribe in general avoided, except in extreme cases. At one time, needing more pasturage for his dry cows, Clark bought a few acres just east and north of Red Point, but as soon as the emergency passed, he disposed of the land.

While Clark Wells Kenyon gave little attention to what is called a social life, did not go to church, and was modest regarding his standing in the community, he was at the same time. self-respecting, true to his principals, frank and outspoken. In short, he was a great county gentleman. he deserved and enjoyed the respect and good-will of everyone who knew him.

On March 5, 1837, he bought of Oliver R. Strong, 37 acres in lot 87 at Onondaga Hill. It was east of Red Point, north of the road.

On March 9, 1839, he sold some land in lot 87 that he had received from the state. It was priced at $41.63.

      121143A Carrie Kenyon, b 2 Apr 1860; d 30 Jan 1945; m 16 Oct 1883, Fred L. Drury.

Henry inherited from his father, but the sum of $1,150, formerly advance to him, was deducted from his inheritance.

He was a farmer in Onondaga until 1861, when at 43, he moved to Michigan with his wife and five children. Their first winter there was spend in Adrian. The following summer was spent in Jonesville, where Henry bought 210 acres in Allen and Quincy Townships, Branch County, in the southern tier of the State.

Three years later, after selling the farm, he conducted a hotel for two years in Burr Oak, Michigan, 20 to 30 miles west of Quincy on Maple street, about 3 1/2 miles east of the village. This farm was across the road from the one he had previously owned.

There he remained twenty years, all of his children living near him. Then, aged 72, he divided his farm among his children. He and Lovisa moved into the village where their oldest son, Elmer, was in business. After three quite years, henry passed away. Lovisa lived eight years longer, passing away in her 80th year.

Like his father, Henry Kenyon was an energetic, enterprising and competent farmer, and a good business man. Honest and self-reliant, he was modest at public gatherings, being witty and humorous. Of slender but strong build, he was about 5 ft. 7 in. tall and weighed 130 lb.s at the age of 60.

Lovisa Fay Kenyon was in all respect an able, efficient and loving wife and mother. She was a cousin of William A. Fay, husband of Clarissa Ann Kenyon (12114B).

      1211441 Franklin Israel Kenyon, b 4 Apr 1845; d 28 Sept 1853.

Israel was the first of his father's children to marry, which he did when he was nineteen or twenty years old. His bride was 18 or 19. The month and day of their wedding is not in the records.

Ethalana Matthewson was a sister of james Monroe Mattewson, farmer and owner of the cider mill across the road from John Strong. Their parents were from Van Buren, N.Y. and were married 19 Feb 1817. Her mother was the daughter of Stephen and Jerusha Brown of Geddes, N.Y.

Israel and Ethalana lived in the house east of their parents. It belonged to the farm bought by his father in 1845. After Israel's death she and her three children continued to live there. When death laid hold of Israel, in 1847, he was only 25. His son Franklin Israel kenyon died at the age of seven. His daughter, Bethia Annette kenyon, was only 18 when she died. It may be noted that four of Israel's brothers died abnormally young also.

The loss of so many persons early in life, most of whose ancestors had been notable long-lived, show plainly how inadequate their health service was as compared to ours. One source of calamity for many lay in their wells, polluted by underground circulation, the nature of the underlying soil being one important factor. Another explanation was the lack of knowledge of the nature of infectious diseases. In combating an unseen, unknown host of microscopic enemies, the physicians were helpless. It seemed to many that a power higher than man was involved.

On Nov 9 1848, about a year after Israel's death, his children received by his will a deed for the farm upon which they were living, the 23 acres bought from Samuel S. Weaver in 1845. In 1854 a piece of this land was sold to Onondaga Scholl District No. 36, as the site for the Red Point School house.

      12114B4 Willis A. Fay, b ----; d 27 May 1858 in Infancy.

Jerry Phillips was the superintendent of the Onondaga County Poor House. A receipt signed by him on Dec 22, 1847, acknowledges the delivery by Israel Kenyon at the County House of 1323 lbs. of pork, at 5 1/2 cents a pound.

Clarissa and William Fay lived on the eastern end of her grandfather's original farm, on the south side of the road. They were next to Kenyon relatives on three sides, on the west, Curtis Kenyon (121145); north across the road, Israel's family, and John and Eliza Strong, both of whom were relatives on the east. To the fifty acres received from her father's estate other land was added, a part of which was the 25 acres that Emily Seeley had inherited. The deed for that was given to William A. Fay, for $1250, on May 29, 1866. It was east of her two sisters' land which in turn was east of Curtis's property. Eventually she acquired 25 acres of this adjacent property from Emily.

As Curtis Kenyon's (121145) children, on their was to school, had to pass their Aunt Clarissa's house, they were naturally well acquainted with her and their cousins. The house was unusually attractive, and of course painted white which was then the only color used for homes. The barns were at the rear of the house, therefore partly concealed from the road. The front yard was filled with red-cherry trees, shrubs and flowers. At the west side, were the garden and the apple orchard.

Clarissa was a rather large woman, like her mother, some what slow in movement and speech, gentle and cordial in her manner. Like most Kenyon relatives, she had a sweet, pleasant voice.

After his father died, his mother Demis and 16 year old curtis proved to be good farmers. Curtis, being young, intelligent and ambitious was unusually active. He worked from early morning to late evening.

Upon his mother's death, curtis inherited his father's homestead of 82 1/2 acres of land. To that he added April 1, 1866 the 25 acres inherited by his sister Celestia Fellows, paying her a high price of $100 per acre. It was on the south side of the road, just east of his other fields.

Curtis did not marry until ten years after his father's death. his wife, Mary Ann Caten, was then living four miles west, at Hewlett Hill. In winter, curtis rose at five o'clock to tend his stock, and at four in the summertime. His buildings, tools, fences, stock, orchards, woodlot and farming land were all in first-class condition.

About 1865, his grain barn caught fire and burned to the ground. Fortunately a wind was blowing away for the other buildings. By strenuous exertions on the part of a "bucket brigade" of neighbors, water was passed in good quantity from the brook to Curtis, at the top of a ladder against the nearest barn, to keep it wet. It was only scorched.

Curtis was stated by his neighbors to have been a good speaker. Israel Kenyon emphatically stated that "Uncle Curtis was the best speaker I ever heard!".

When a young man, Curtis attended, for a time, the Howlett Hill school, which was larger than other schools nearby. It was four miles and he rode to it on horseback. There he became intimate with his future brother-in-law, Lawton Caten.

From Sept 1, 1863, until his death in 1868, Curtis was a member of the State Militia. He was a private, then first sergeant, second lieutenant and after December 11, 1865, a first lieutenant. He belonged to the 85th Regiment of Infancy, 24th Brigade, 6th Division.

Curtis was a kind, even tempered man, and fond of social gatherings.

In his 37th year, in mid-summer, he was taken very sick. The doctor recognized the familiar symptoms of the dreaded disease which had carried off so many of the family, old and young. Curtis was sick with typhoid fever. In less than a week, the body of Curtis Kenyon was laid with the others at Onondaga Hill.

Mary Ann Caten, the wife of Curtis, was the only daughter of Leonard and Nancy (OL>

rior) Caten After ten years of marriage, she had lost her husband. Her father was 53 when she was born, from his 83rd to 94th year, he lived with her.

She received a portion of her father's estate. On January 30, 1849, she and her sister jointly had a deed to 50 acres on the south side of the road, east of Curtis's (121145) land. Curtis later bought her 25 acres for $2,500.

Celestia and William lived at Onondaga Hill in 1853, after their marriage. Their only child was born there. Soon afterwards, they moved to Onondaga Valley where their home, on Seneco Street, was the third or fourth house from the foot of the long hill and on the right side as you come down from Onondaga Hill.

William Fellows was the colonel of the regiment of the Militia to which Curtis Kenyon (121145) and Israel K. Phillips belonged.

      12114D2 Curtis Seeley, b 16 Aug 1869; d July 1933.

She was the youngest daughter of Israel and Demis; and except for the child Merritt, who lived only fifteen months, she was the youngest of the forty-four grandchildren of John and Hannah Kenyon of Onondaga.

Emily inherited 50 acres of land from her father Israel jointly with her sister Celestia on January 30, 1849. But her share of 25 acres was later transferred to their sister Clarissa.

Charles Seeley, was born in Summer at Tompkins County, New York. Their first home together was on Colvin Street on the farm later owned by Syracuse University for use in its teaching of agriculture. There son Herbert was born there.

In Onondaga Valley they afterwards owned a farm on south Salina Street, corner of Seeley Avenue, where they died. Charles Seeley accumulated considerable property, and left his widow and sons well off financially.

Among other articles, she kept as long as she lived is a butter jar or keg, in which her paternal grandfather, Benjamin Kenyon, carried his money, in coin, from Dutchess County to Rensselaer.

She also had a roughly-made sword, fashioned from a sythe which she said, Benjamin (1212) wore in the Revolutionary War when he marched to Plattsburg, New York, and a `pipe-lighter' which he also took on that trip.

A niece of Elizabeth, Mrs. Sarah Tingue said that the sword disappeared at the time of Elizabeth's death. Benjamin Kenyon (1212) served in the Revolution under Colonel Goose Van Schaick.

She had a large share in the preparation of a memorial to him. The volume entitled `Master of the Gunnery' was published in 1887 and was illustrated by the artist-naturalist, William hamilton Gibson.

John C. Brinsmade succeeded Mr. Gunn as the headmaster of the school and in an address he made in 1930 at a reunion of the Gunnery Alumni he said among other references to Amy Kenyon, that "she was a popular and efficient teacher with a strong influence for good in the Gunnery Family for twenty years...In these later years she has spent a great deal of time collecting, compiling and editing material of interest and value to our Washington community, as witness the many volumes now on file in the Gunn Memorial Library."

Mr. Kenyon retired from active business, first to travel, and then in 1913 to live on his country estate near Poughkeepsie. The rubber garments and automobile tires of C. Kenyon Co. were widely known in and out of the United States. The tires were purchased on contract by the U.S. government for use by the military and naval services.
