      D. Henry Gowing was an able, energetic and successful business man. In Syracuse his chief business was the manufacture of rennet-extract (for cheese making) and the sale of diary supplies (D. H. Gowing Diary Supply Co.). At different times, he kept the accounts of the Porter Manufacturing Co. and the Moyer Carriage Factory.

In the south, he had a large veneer-mill, first at Burnsville, West Virginia, then at Portsmouth, Virginia. The firm name was the D. H. Gowing Veneer Company.

Gowing was a most generous and public spirited citizen. he was an active member of the Syracuse First Ward Presbyterian Church. His first wife was Frances French (Alvord) Gowing, by whom he had two daughters, Helen Lousie Gowing, born on 19 Oct 1877 and died on 12 July 1912. His second daughter was Sarah French Gowing born on 19 July 1881.

Helen Gowing graduated from Syracuse University, her major was in history. For a number of years she taught that subject in the Cittenango, Rome, and Syracuse High Schools. She died after an operation.

Sarah Gowing married on 5 May 1904 in Syracuse, New York to George B. Broad, M.D. he was born on 3 Dec 1871 and was the son of William Lawrence Broad.

Cora Kenyon was always socially active. Since the death of her husband, her summers have been passed at her cottage on Star Lake in the Adirondacks, and her winters mostly in Syracuse.

Oscar and his wife Fannie lived for 21 years after their marriage at 716 Lancaster Ave., Syracuse, where their children were born. In 1913 they built a house at 2515 East Genesee Street and lived there till they died.

Fannie graduated from the Port Jervis Academy, and attended Vassar College for a year. She has been active and popular socially. She was President of the Wednesday and Roman Rambler Clubs of Syracuse, and Leader of a Circle in the Park Central Presbyterian Church. She always carried on a large correspondence with relatives and friends and collected large amounts of information relating to her children's heritage.

Oscar graduated from the Syracuse High School and Syracuse University with a B.A., M.A., D.K.E. He attended summer schools at Harvard and Cornell University for three years. He travelled on summer in Europe. For two years after graduating from college he was a clerk in Syracuse at the Durston Book Store. He was later the Principal of the Painted Post Academy in New York for two years. Then he became the Principals of the Port Jervis Academy for six months, Prescott Grammer School in Syracuse for one year, a teacher of Physics from 1888 until 1923 and at the same time, Head of the Science Department of the Syracuse Central High School. He was also President of the New York Science Teachers' Association for one year.

After retiring in 1923, from teaching due to nervous headaches, gave the remainder of his life, chiefly, to writing an account of the lives of his ancestors, relatives and friends. Without his diligent works, the accounts of this branch of the Kenyon family would be very bare.

Oscar Kenyon died from a fall in his home. He suffered injuries to his right leg and shock when he fell down the cellar stairs. he had previously suffered two or more shocks during the preceding one and a half years. He was later buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, New York.

Oscar was one of the co-founders of the Syracuse Boy's Club.

Frances, following his death, planning to sell their home in Syracuse, moved to live with her daughter Frances in Allentown, Pennsylvania. While writing a letter to a friend about her husband, received a cerebral shock. She was taken to the hospital and slowly became paralyzed. She was soon unable to speak and remained conscious long enough to recognize her children who had assembled. She died only ten days later. The funeral was in Syracuse and she was interned in the Oakwook Cemetery.

Oscar was about 5 1/2 feet tall, wore spectacles, and for most of his teaching life, and a mustache. He instilled the value of work and self-control in his children. During his later years he gradually became blind and deaf. Realizing this trend towards blindness, he practiced writing in the dark so that he could, with pains, transcribe letters that he could not see. He had no use physicians and said that they did not know their business thoroughly and could not know him as he did himself. Without their assistance, he recovered from broken ribs and live a period with high blood pressure and blindness.

He was born in Salem, New York and died in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He is buried beside his second wife in the Scofield burying ground in Geuda Springs, Kansas. His first wife had no children, but they adopted a daughter by the name of Minnie Getchell (b 7 Dec 1867), while residing in Livingston County, Illinois. This child grew to womanhood and married and died early in life. His eldest son was named after General Ransom, his brigade commander, who was killed in the siege of Vicksburg. His youngest son was named after General O. O. Howard. his infant daughter, June, is buried in the Scofield-Kenyon burying ground in the cemetery at Gueda Springs, Kansas, beside her parents and her grandparents on the Scofield side. His father was a minister of a church in Providence, Rhode Island, during the Dorr Rebellion. When President Tyler came to speak in 1842, Archibald Kenyon held his four year old son up in his arms to see president Tyler, who later served as a member of the Confederate Congress from Virginia. He remembered the Revolutionary War soldiers who were still numerous in his boyhood days in New York. In 1847 he removed to Ohio with his parents, and in 1852 the family removed to Illinois. He was developing a newly acquired farm near Mt. Carroll, Illinois, when he enlisted on President Lincoln's first call for 75,000 volunteers. He enlisted in the Lincoln-Douglas debates and voted for Lincoln before and during the Civil War. He was appointed 1st sergeant upon original enlistment. On 31 july 1861, he was commissioned 1st lieutenant. He was taken prisoner at Ft. Donelson, 15 Feb 1862.

The following account is taken from his war diary:

"Some skirmishing through the night between the pickets and a pretty rough night. All of us pretty well worn out at daylight this morning. The firing commenced to be pretty heavy on the right and soon it came our turn to receive a share. Our regiment stood like men, forcing the enemy to fall back, but the right by this time began to give way and they attacked us again with double fury and by this time the engagement became general. The right still giving way, we moved by the right to support the 31st left flank. The fire now was murderous. The 11th forming the angle where the right was turned was subjected to a heavy crossfire. The combat group of Company K, 11th, Ill. stood in their position until they were almost all killed or wounded. The enemy being close on to us, we were ordered to fall back - what was left of us - but it was almost impossible as the firing was terrific. Some attempted to get away in that direction but I thought best not to try it and the infantry coming up took me prisoner. They took me before General Floyd who ordered us to be taken into town where I found quite a number of our men prisoners, a good many whom were wounded. We were put in a brick jail and kept there a short time and then put aboard the steamer J. H. BALDWIN and started up the river toward nashville. Our wounded men suffered much but they were as well cared for as their [the Confederates] own."

Note: General Floyd had served as Secretary of War under President Buchanan and was forced to resign in 1860 for illegal payments of funds to contractors for which he was indicted on federal warrants. During his questioning of prisoners, including Lieut. Kenyon, he was told and led to believe that Grant and Sherman would execute him outright for betraying his trust as a cabinet member in moving ordnance supplies south. The incidents of this interview and that of some Irish boy of the Union prisoners telling General Floyd what was coming to him were related to Howard Nathaniel Kenyon quite clearly. Floyd had the Irish boy put in stocks for insolence as he went aboard the steamer. However, General Floyd wasted no time and fled his command a few hours after the steamer BALDWIN got under way. He passed the BALDWIN on another steamer on the way to Nashville. For his conduct in abandoning his troops he was later relieved of command and died out of service before the end of the war.

While a prisoner of war Lt. Kenyon was commissioned captain on 7 April 1862 after vice Captain Carter was killed at Shiloh. He was exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Va., 12 Oct 1862, and ordered to join his command within 30 days. He led Company "K", 11th Illinois Infantry, in the general assault on Vicksburg when Grant attempted to carry position by direct attack. He was wounded in the head by a musket ball during the siege, carried from the field and pronounced dead, recovered and returned to duty in 30 days. He was married while on the 30 day sick leave from his injury. He was in the following engagements: Forts Henry and Donelson, Champion Hills, Vicksburg, Yazoo City, Black River Bridge, Spanish Fort, Blakely and Mobile. As a prisoner of war he served in Tuscaloosa, Castle Thunder and Libby. He was the war governor of Mobile for a short time.

He was commissioned lieutenant colonel in December 1864, and commanded the regiment near the close of the war, but due to the cessation of the war, he was not commissioned into the next higher grade.

After the Civil War he settled at Chattsworth, Illinois, where he was appointed postmaster in May 1869, and held office until 1881 when he removed to Gueda Springs, Kansas, where he engaged in the cattle business in Indian Territory and operated a coal and lumber business.

He was the mayor of Gueda Springs for a number of years. While serving as mayor he was deputized to assist in capturing a bandit operating in kansas and the Territory border. On 4 July 1888, in making the arrest in company with another officer, he was shot through the body. The 38 caliber ball entered below the right lower rib and left above the left hip bone. He was reported dead in the local press and the bandit was pursued into the Territory but escaped. The officer in company with Colonel Kenyon was shot at the same time through a lower limb and died from unsuccessful amputation.

In 1893 he made the run at the opening of the Cherokee Strip and settled close to the location of his former ranch headquarters in the Indian Territory. His first wife died in Chattsworth, Illinois. His second wife was born in Brenton Township, Ford County, Illinois. Her father was descended from Daniel Scofield, one of the original settlers of Stamford, Connecticut, and her mother was Mary (Hay) Scofield, who was the daughter of Mary Hays and William Hay. Her grandmother, Mary Hays, was a daughter of Lt. James Hays of the American Revolution from Center County, Pennsylvania.

    1711131 THOMAS RAY KENYON, B 9 Aug 1846; D 9 Aug 1863.

Thomas was born in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. He received a "good common school education" at the Gate schoolhouse in Hopkington, and then went to work on his uncle Matthew Kenyon's farm in North Stonington, Connecticut.

On 11 August 1862, he enlisted in the 7th Rhode Island and was assigned to Company A along with his cousin Nathan P. Edwards. According to family legend, Thomas' father had refused to give his consent. When his father was away from home, Thomas begged his mother to sign his enlistment papers, and she finally gave in.

The "Seventh" was mustered on 7 September, and began their journey to the Potomac. From Fredericksburg they marched to the Mississippi, and embarked on the "Mississippi Campaign".

On 9 August 1863, his 19th birthday, Thomas Kenyon died of a disease on the steamer "David Tatum," anchored on the Yazoo River. The following is from a history of the regiment:

"In one deserted hut the men found an empty bunk of good
material which they knocked to pieces, and then brought the
boards on to the boat, intending to use them for shelter
during a shower. That very evening, however, they were used
by the finders to make a coffin for Thomas Kenyon of Co. A,
who was failing rapidly when the regiment embarked, and was
claimed by the grim reaper before the night's stopping place
was reached. In the darkness, a few comrades carried his
remains ashore, and buried them by the river's bank."

It is assumed from this account that Thomas was buried between the mouth of the Mississippi river and the Missouri river.

As a memorial to Thomas Kenyon, his name appears on his parent's gravestone in Oak Knoll Cemetery in Palmer, Massachusetts.
