Denver Area Model Yachting Association

About The Club

The Denver Area Model Yachting Association has been active in Colorado for more than 40 years. We are sanctioned with the American Model Yachting Association as club number 9, placing us among some of the oldest sailing clubs in the country. Our club registers around 30 members annually, allowing us an active and full sailing schedule. In addition to regular open sailing and scheduled fleet races, we also offer sailing clinics, sail making classes, and various club social functions. Visitors are always welcome to join us for sailing or to learn more about the hobby. Sailing takes place nearly every Sunday, at Garland Park from noon until 5pm, weather permitting. Garland Park is located on the North side of Cherry Creek Drive, between Monaco and Holly Street. The popular “Cherry Creek Bike Path” also runs through Garland Park, making Lollypop Lake an excellent stopping point to take a rest and watch the sailing activities. Our official sailing season runs between May and October, although it is common to see boats on the water from early spring into late autumn.

The 2007 sailing season is now complete. We will post the 2008 schedule as it develops. Please check back in the New Year to see what events we have planned for next year. Most ponds in the Denver area begin to thaw out in March or April. Please feel free to contact us with questions anytime through the winter. Have a happy Holiday season and a great New Year!

While open sailing is available to anyone and any boat type, scheduled club racing for current members is currently limited to the following three classes: the Soling One Meter, the Marblehead, and the Ten Rater. Listed below is a brief description of each class.

Classes We Sail

Soling One Meter
The S1M is a one-design class boat that is well suited to the new sailor. One-design classes require that all the boats be identical, therefore bringing all sailors to an equal level of competition. This makes the S1M a great fleet to participate in. The combination of local availability, low cost, portability, and national popularity make this class a good starter boat for anyone. Although simple in design, some of our more experienced sailors enjoy the camaraderie of this fleet. Around a third of our club members regularly sail in this class, which gives the S1M an active sailing schedule and helpful support group.
Length: 1 meter Cost: $300-$500

Marblehead
The Marblehead, or 50/800, is a very popular developmental class of boat. Developmental class boats are designed around a set of parameters in their class rules, consequently promoting new ideas and uniqueness among boats. While general dimensions of the boats are standardized, individual designs and performance levels can vary. The Marblehead class offers boats that are high performance, but which also require more advanced building skills. Over half of our club members sail in this class, giving it a very full and competitive monthly racing schedule.
Length: 50 in Cost: $400-$1000

Ten Rater
The Ten Rater is also a developmental class of boat, but allows many more design variations than the 50/800. There is a wide range of boat design theory found in this class, giving it some of the highest performance sailing in all of model yachting. Few other classes of boats match their speed and technology. Having the largest and most active fleet of Ten Raters in the country, our racing schedule combines a balance of series racing, monthly regattas, and various annual championship events. Nearly half of our club members also sail in this class, again allowing a full racing schedule. Due to their complex and advanced designs, Ten Raters are best suited for experienced builders and sailors.
Length: 60-70 in Cost: $750-$2000
