URBANA
A street orientated turntablism performance for slide projectors
The URBANA project brings together artists from different disciplines and perspectives who express, each in their own way, their relationship with city life. It is fundamentally a work of combination and spontaneity.
These audio-visual events consist of performing within the context of the shifting, restless patterns of life in the metropolis, this being at once the motivation for the activities and the stage for them. Furthermore, an idea shared by all participants is that it has become necessary to take art out of galleries and into spaces where people meet and relate to one another, and life in general goes on. The result is a series of sensory environments, utilising above all sight, sound and physical sensation.
The images are all inspired by the city, in the broadest sense of the word: from the blatantly obvious architectural visuals to more intimate fragments of captured human affairs. These are then projected as slides onto walls, floors, people and objects , in such a way that it is not necessary to be in a specific place to take part in the performance.
The same applies to the sound, where the use of old waste technologies along with more intimate found tapes, personal recordings and other materials from the street form a collage which, together with the visuals, helps create an interesting sensory envirionment.
A key observation reflected in this project is that the inner self, our private life, does not stop when we step out our front door: it continues to thrive even as we involve ourselves in the outside world (working life, socialising etc.). There exists a simultaneous involvement in both the private and the public. For example, whilst travelling by bus or in any other public space, usually instead of starting up any kind of communication with those around us we are locked in dialogue intermittently with our inner selves , with all the associated worries, reflections, sensations, desires etc. In short, the division between the public and the private is something forced and false; URBANA aims to express the reality which is a union of these 'areas' by means of an event which at the same time is ephemeral in terms of both sound and vision.
We are inspired by the notion of a city as a generator of experiences; of chance meetings and passing connections, with both others and with the physical environment of the city iteslf. This sort of experience is more acute in urban ares and cannot be experienced to the same degree in villlages or suburbs. A sort of unwritten behaviour pattern is set by life in such an environment which affects the nature of our dealings with others .
Of interest is the composition of the human mass found in cities; a mixture of permanent residents, travellers on package tours and simple passers-by. This diverse combination of people, all of whom have varying degrees of feelings of attachment or rejection to the urban environment, is both an inspiration and a target for URBANA perfomances. A human current of diverse elements moving through the same space yet in most cases never interacting or really forming part of anything. URBANA events aim to make establishing connections a reality by involving this mass in an ephemeral 'art event'.
