SOCE: THE INTERVIEW
CS: How old are you?
SOCE: 25

CS: Are you single?
SOCE: .. At times, I do enjoy partaking of the finer things in life…

CS: What’s your guy type?
SOCE: Large, big and strong. Often people I’m into are considered ugly by the general populace, but sometimes I go for mainstream pretty boys as well.

CS: What was high school like for you?
SOCE: It was alright. I was in 9th grade and I was always thinkin about guys. So I went to this guidance counselor and she was like, "Well don’t do anything about it now.. it may just be a phase." So I kinda repressed myself and built everything up until my sophomore year in college.
CS: Nice "Counselor".
SOCE: Yeah really. She was a nice woman, but she was from an older generation, so I don’t think she was hip to homosexuality in the 90’s. Actually, I think that was the last year she was there.

CS: How old were you when you came out?
SOCE: 20

CS: OK you’re gay, white, Jewish and from New Hampshire. Do you feel like you’re battling stereotypes every time you get on the mic?
SOCE: People look at me and know I’m not a 50 Cent or a DMX. I just want them to see that I’m not a Vanilla Ice clown, either. I want to be compelling and entertaining.

CS: What instruments do play?
SOCE: I’ve play the violin for over 20 years, did some trombone in jr high school, played the drum set in college, plus I sing and mess around on the piano. I’ve been fooling on bass a lil bit as well.

CS: What is the most "life altering event" to happen to you up til now and how has it affected you as a person?
SOCE: The time I came out. I got this epiphany that I had more control over how I lived my life. Like I used to hang with these guys that I didn’t really like them that much. I mean we didn’t have that much common ground. Suddenly, I realized I didn’t have to force to hang out and force a relationship. It was very philosophical.

CS: Have you ever been "booed" off stage?
SOCE: Well the 1st time I ever got on stage people started to "boo" me and the announcer came back on stage and got on the mic and as like "hey don’t boo him just because he’s white" By the end , they were into and applauded me. I went back many more times, and around a year later (Sept 2003), I was rapping more "gay" lyrics but I didn’t feel like they were getting it, so finally I just started singing the chorus "sucking dick, sucking dick...." and people actually jumped on stage telling me stop. The announcers came out and told everyone to calm down and that I had waited my turn and deserved to do whatever I wanted to perform, so they were very cool for saying that. After I finished that track though, I was feeling kind of nervous about some of the guys in the audience, so I just got my crew and we left. I actually haven’t yet returned to that open mic, but I’m still friends with the people who run it.

CS: What is the most negative thing directed towards you that you’ve heard since you started rapping?
SOCE: This pretty famous underground rapper was performing and in his lyrics he usually would said something like ... I’m not a homo... and instead he said I’m not Soce. I mean it was kinda insulting, but then I was kinda like yeah, here’s this rapper who’s pretty well known and he’s using my name. It makes people wonder who is this "soce" he’s talking about. I mean I wish Jay Z would say something about me like "Oh Soce you’re a bitch, man."

CS: Who are your musical influences?
SOCE: This group Above the Law. They had this song Freedom of Speech. My sister made a mix tape for me in sixth grade that included that track on it. Out of all the cuts on her tape, it was Freedom of Speech that I kept going to and listening to over and over again. I've always been a fan of A Tribe Called Quest. Its serious, its hood but its also relaxed. I use to hate Wu-Tang clan but now it’s grown on me. I can recite a whole verse of theirs and have no idea what I’m talking about but it sounds tough. I mean Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem of course they are amazing. This artist called Aesop Rock, and dub-L as well. I really like Fabolous.
CS: Really? I’m not a big fan of Fabolous.
SOCE: Well, you have to be first of all because his name is *Fabulous*.
CS: Well yeah but it use to be Fabolous Sport when he was just on the mix tape circuit but he changed it.
SOCE: Yeah that’s right. But yeah he’s basically the same as Mase except without all that boy toy crap.
CS: What is the most desperate or pathetic thing you’ve done for self promotion?
SOCE: (Laughs) I email people a lot. I’ll email tons of hot guys on friendster and be like "hey check out my website" "watch my video" Friendster is difficult tho cause you can only email one person at a time. Once I got on myspace I can post messages and add friends and they can listen to music. Now I get a lot of people emailing me saying things like "hey I just listened to your work/play bar mitzvah remix and it’s really hot" But yeah I spend WAY too much time online. I’m not really a big promoter in public like passing out free CD’s or stickers, etc. Once in a while if I see a gay couple on the train, I may approach them with some soce propaganda.

CS: Is that you on EVERY one of your hooks?
SOCE: Yes. It is me on I’m So Gay, on Dickless, etc. At some point I may bring in some R & B singer . Right now I’m pretty lazy so I’m just like "I can just do this myself" But eventually if I make it big and I have to make it sound really good, I’m probably gonna have to do it that way.

CS: I know you work a "9-5" what do you do?
SOCE: Computer programmer on Wall Street. Even some of my coworkers call me soce, but I don’t think they realize how sexual/explicit some of my lyrics are.

CS: Are you at the point now where you make a profit off of music or do you just break even?
SOCE: I’m still not making a profit, but I made more money then I did last year. Sometimes I do make a handful of money at shows, so I mean it’s definitely on the up.

CS: Would you like to eventually become an MC full time or just keep a "normal" life and MC as a hobby?
SOCE: Definitely an M.C. I mean it’s every MC’s dream to live off their music. But I’m scared right now to take the plunge. Other people I know who are kinda well known MCs tell me I should keep my job because I can fall back on it and their life is still a struggle even though they are well known. I kinda wanna take the plunge in the next year of so thought because I don’t wanna be 30 and be rapping about being horny and wacking off. That won’t be cool. I mean I could try doing hip hop 24/7 for a year or two and if it doesn’t work out I could go back to an office job.
CS: Why not? Tons of MCs are in their 30s.
SOCE: That’s true, Eminem is in his 30s. Dr. Dre...
CS: LL Cool J.. Christ how old is he now?
SOCE: Yeah and Michael Jackson, he’s not so young and he’s still singing about girls.
CS: (LAUGHS)

CS: What gets your creative juices flowing for writing new track/albums?
SOCE: Tragedy. If I’m in love with a guy and he doesn’t love me back, I write all these versus about it. SO yeah if I have a love jones. Sometimes things become too "normal" and I have take a trip and be like Ok I’m here to do hip hop and I can just sit down with my pad of paper and write a verse and will be hot or sometimes it wont. The problem is that I really like to play video games and be on the web. If I didn’t play video games and spend so much time on the web, I would have so many more tracks and albums.

CS: Who under no circumstances (no matter how famous they are) would you never want to collaborate with?
SOCE: Hmm that’s a tough one (pauses) but if I had to choose. Probably Suge Knight because he’s pretty scary.
CS: Yeah, well I don’t think you’re alone on that one.
SOCE: Yeah I mean anyone really homophobic, so I guess 50 cent because I guess he’s really homophobic—yo 50, if you’re not homophobic, then call me.

CS: Who is smarter.. Paris Hilton or Anna Nicole?
SOCE: Anna Nicole Smith.. Definitely. She didn’t come from money or anything. I mean she came from nothing and made it all on her own. Not to mention she’s older so, she probably has a lot more experience. I do have to admit though, I liked her better when she was big. It gave her more character. When I see her on those trim spa ads, it’s like she now looks like everybody else.

CS: What quote would you like to be remembered by?
SOCE: I’ll probably regret giving this as my end-quote, but "I suck so much dick, it’s ridiculous. I’ve gotten so much dick, I’m fuckin sick of this."
