NEWS!!! Carol Alban will be a featured performer at the 2008 World Flute Fest Concert at Carnegie Hall on September 27th, 2008.
Carol assembled a star-studded line-up of musicians to play at a benefit concert for Christopher Rodriguez on March 24th, 2008 at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland. Christopher was recently taking a piano lesson and got hit by a stray bullet from a near-by robbery and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Carol Alban is an active flute teacher and performer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was on the advisory board for the recent James Galway Master Class at Copia in Napa and also assisted Lady Galway with the Teen Workshop part of the event.
Carol has performed at such notable venues at the Berkeley Piano Club, the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, and the notorious CBGBs in New York City. She recently performed with Bert Lams (of the famed California Guitar Trio) in a successful benefit for the California Symphony at the home of Channel 7's Dan Ashley.
Music runs in her family and her musical ancestry includes the Norwegian virtuoso violinist and composer, Ole Bull. He was often known as the "Nordic Paganini". He played an instrumental role in the career of Grieg and was an exponent of Norwegian folk music. Carol performs with various small ensembles including the Oakland New Music Ensemble and serves as the Principal Flutist of the Bay Area Chamber Symphony. Carol Alban recently founded the San Francisco Flute Quartet. She was a featured performer at the 2006 Bay Area Flute Fest.
Carol began her music studies on the piano and started playing the flute at the age of nine. Carol studied privately with Paul Renzi, former Principal Flutist with the San Francisco Symphony, while attending San Francisco State University as a Music Major with an emphasis in Flute Performance. Some other flute instructors/mentors have included Julie McKenzie (Principal Flutist with the San Francisco Opera), Janet See, and April King, former protege of Julius Baker. Carol's flute playing has been employed on a variety of CDs and she has recorded three albums of her own featuring her own compositions. "Harvest", "Reflections", and "Twilight". Carol also composes for film. Recently her music was used in the documentary "Wild Beauty Betrayed" and in the short film "Annie's Secret" which was recently submitted to film festivals. The song, "Down in the Delta" which she co-wrote with lyricist/vocalist Alvenson Moore was used in the film "Character is Destiny" (Dreamweaver Films) and Carol composed the soundtrack for "Goodbye, My Love". The title track was co-written w/ Alvenson Moore who will be singing at the 2007 World Flute Fest.
"Elegy", a solo piece she dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina has received favorable reviews from various sources including the New York Times. It was premiered at a Hurricane Katrina Benefit concert that included performances by Frederica Von Stade and Michael Tilson Thomes who called the piece "Beautiful!". It has been performed on violin by Mary Rowell (Ethel String Quartet) at the Tribeca New Music Festival and at Beth Anderson's Women's Work Concert Series at the Greenwich House Music School in New York City. It is currently being performed on clarinet and saxophone by Demetrius Spaneas on his Eurasian tour. Visit Carol's myspace page to hear samples of her playing and composing. Carol Alban ~ Private Flute Lessons
Flute Instruction- Beginners thru Advanced students are welcome! Improve tone, technique and musicianship in a supportive environment. Ages 8 and over are welcome! There are regular recitals which give students a chance to meet each other and perform in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Carol also teaches beginning piano, voice, fife, guitar and composition. Music Lessons with Carol Alban are $50 (hour). Semi-private lessons- Add $10 per additional student. Oakland/Piedmont borderlocation. $10 travel fee for lessons in your home (limited area)
24 hr. notice required for lesson changes. Lessons not cancelled within 24 hrs. must be paid for. In certain cases, make-ups may be available. Karen Peterson, a flute student of Carol's, offered the following for this site:

Carol Alban is available to perform at your special event(wedding, party, reception, art opening, etc.)anywhere in the Bay Area including Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Napa, Marin and San Francisco. She also performs in the Alban Tyler Flute Duo with classical flautist Nancy Tyler. They will be performing together at the upcoming World Flute Fest at Carnegie Hall, New York. ~Some Past Performances~ Carol Alban participated in a star studded concert to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina at the Temple Emanu-el in San Francisco on Sept 12th. Over $16,000 was raised.
Cantor Roslyn Barak was joined by guest artists San Francisco Symphony Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, Frederica von Stade, Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill, grammy award winning cellist Emil Miland, flautist Carol Alban, members of the San Francisco Symphony, the Adler fellows of the San Francisco Opera Center and DAVKA.
Carol Alban's latest composition for solo flute, "Elegy" (which is dedicated to the hurricane victims) had its premiere performance at the Sept. 12th benefit concert and was very well received.
"That was beautiful." said Michael Tilson Thomas (after hearing Carol perform it at the Hurricane Benefit Concert).
The Tsunami Relief concert Carol organized at the Oakland Chapel of the Chimes was a rousing success! Performers included Miles Graber (piano), Patti Weiss (violin) , Daniel Hoffman with Klez-x, Dylan Snodgrass(piano), Nancy Tyler flute), soprano Katya Roemer, Francis Lockwood (piano), Philip Gelb (shakuhachi), Suellen Primost (cello) and Katrina (Katie") Wreede (violist and former member of the Turtle Island Quartet).
Reception for artist Ali Golkar at the Martin Lawrence Gallery in SF. Berkeley Free Folk Festival and also conducted a Fife Workshop. Performance with flutist Nancy Tyler and bassoonist Heather O'Connor at the opening reception for Marc Chagall's "Circus Suite" at the Martin Lawrence Gallery in San Francisco. Carol and her mother(Mary Beth Alban) co-wrote their own "Circus Suite" in four movements which they debuted at the event. Guitarist Rafael Manriquez(see above) and Carol perform at local events and parties and performed at the gala opening night reception for the 3rd Annual Photo SF Expo at Fort Mason. Cellist Suellen Primost and I performed the following year at the 4th Annual Expo.
Need music for your next movie? Carol recently completed the soundtrack for "Annie's Secret" which is being submitted at several film festivals. She also wrote the soundtrack for a short film, "Goodbye, My Love". Lyricist and vocalist Alvenson Moore co-wrote the title track with me. Alvenson recently performed it whith the Bay Area Chamber Symphony at their Bach & Beyond concert. Alvenson and Carol also co-wrote the song "Down in the Delta" which was placed in the feature film, "Character is Destiny"(Dreamweaver Films) released in April, 2002.
Carol is an excellent sight-reader(flute) and is available for recording projects. Her rate for recording is $125 for the first hour and $100/hour thereafter. Travel charges may apply depending on location. Carol Alban founded the Piedmont Fife Club and is finishing up a book of folk songs for the flute or fife.
