Genetic Testing
Genetic Testing
I have been waiting for genetic testing to become readily available and I am pleased to say the time has come. Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratories has recently released a new group of cutting edge tests by the name Genovations.  Currently, there are four genetic profiles that can be tested. Clicking on Genovations will to take you to the website for more information.

If you have ever wondered why you are feeling chronically unwell while others around you are seemingly fine, then these test can give you answers. The different tests look at you as an individual and identifies  single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) that could affect your health.

Many of my patients come to me after having standard medical workups where nothing is ever found.  They feel unwell and yet, after several visits with their primary care the results are “there is nothing wrong with you.” At this point most patients are given an Rx for an antidepressant and maybe some counseling.  While I agree that standard medical workups are very important, I also know they are of limited use in identifying the cause of why some people feel chronically unwell. Thus I have continually sought out the best cutting edge tests that can give my patients the answers they need. Standard laboratory testing is important and I will recommend it if a patient has not had it done. However, if it shows nothing abnormal I move on to the more advanced testing that can provide answers.

I use many different testing companies and have a group of favorite test that I have found to offer the best information at the best price. These new genetic tests from Great Smokies have me excited for my patients. They offer some much-needed answers.
DetoxiGenomic Profile
This test evaluates single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with increased risk of impaired detoxification capacity, especially when exposed to enviromental toxins. It also indetifies individuals potentiallly susceptible to adverse drug reasctions. Bascially what this is saying is that it can reveal why you are much more affected and sensitive to things in the environment. It can tell me why you are more susceptable to having health problems from mercury, lead, or any other evironmental toxin. It discovers why you are different from those around you.

This test can be helpful if you have any of the following: Adverse or unusal reactions to drugs or supplements, cancers, neurodegenerative disorders (affecting the nerves), mood disorders, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity, fatigue, and many others.

ImmunoGenomic Profile
This test evaluates genetic variations in the genes that modulate the immune and inflammatory activity.  These variations can affect the balance between the Tcell-helper 1 (TH1) and Tcell-helper 2 (TH2) arms of the immune system.  These two aspects of the immune system must be in balance for good health.  In many disease conditions one side become dominant.  In allergies for example, TH2 often becomes overly dominant and TH1 is suppressed. This genetic profile looks for the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that would genetically push you to have one arm of your immune system too dominant.

Helpful for the following conditions: Asthma, autoimmune disorders, certain cancers, allergies, infectious diseases, bone inflammation, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, H. pylori (causes ulcers), heart disease, and osteopenia.
