Tuesday 25th September about a dozen Beaver Cub
Scouts (Aberfeldy) and their indefatigable leaders enjoyed a fungi foray in
the Birks with Bill Hoare.  In fungi terms, the site was not very prolific,
but after a few false starts involving discarded sweet wrappers, they got
better at spotting them and became superb at finding every possible trace of
coloured fungi among the fallen leaves.  Various red, green, and yellow
Russulas were those most often found. We talked about the wide range of
shapes and sizes and the youngsters were intrigued by the unusual shape of
some Helvellas close to the car park. These are sometimes called Elfin
Saddles.
A warning about edibility and the poisonous nature of many fungi, and then
some careful hand cleaning, finished off an enjoyable evening.
