In the fall of 1969 I began to fly. It took several months as a student to get my license. This site has some of the history of my flying and a number of links to aviation sites. In 1978 I joined Collins (Rockwell International, Collins Divisions) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A little of that history is also included.
Since I was a small kid I wanted to fly airplanes. It wasn’t until I was out of college for five years that I took the step. I joined the Civil Air Patrol in Waseca, Minnesota where we were living. I learned to fly starting on 12 November 1969 in a Cessna 150, N5789E. It was 28 February 1970 when I first soloed. It was 26 June 1970 when I got my private pilot license. My mother had not been a large support of the notion I should fly, so we didn’t tell her until after I got my license. When we told her she surprised us by agreeing to take a flight with me. It was 1 August 1970 when we flew for over three hours. After that she flew with me several times.
In September I joined the Waseca Flying Club to fly N7951W, a Cherokee 180. I obtained my Instrument and Commercial licenses in that airplane. It now belongs to a friend of mine in Minnesota, Dr. Carl Halum. We used that airplane for many years. We visited family in Independence, MO several times. In June 1976 we went to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. in that airplane.
I was lucky to learn to fly in the CAP and have been involved since I joined. Today I am still paying back that golden opportunity. At least for a while I am helping at the Iowa Wing level. For about eight years I was the Standard/Evaluation Officer. In July 2007 I changed assignments to be the NCR Director of Safety. I have since 1970 been involved in the Minnesota Solo Encampment, now called Flight Academy. Every summer I spend a week with the Academy teaching Cadets how to fly. I must like it to do it for over 30 years. It is different, but I enjoy it. In July 2003 we had our first tornado warning and we all gathered in a hallway of our dormatory. Nothing really happened.
