We have been going to the 4J Big Piney National Scenic Trail Ride since 1992. The camp was located just Southwest of Fort Leonard Wood at N37o 37.91, W92o 2.68. I say “was” because the family that runs the ride lost their lease with the Government. The land was located in the Mark Twain National Forest. The new camp, 4-J Big Piney Horse Camp, south of Duke, MO at N37o 38.860 – W92o 2.550 and is spacious with over 300 covered stalls. Most of the old trails are accessible from the new campsite. There seems to be an endless number of trails for all skill levels.
This is where we were really introduced to the large group rides. The old camp had been there for a long time and showed its age. It had the distinct advantage of size for camping. You were able to take the room you needed. Electrical outlets were widely distributed around the camp and close to most of the campsites. The camp had quite a few tie stalls but most folks picketed their horses. The camp was located right along the banks of the Big Piney River, which didn’t always stay within them. The new camp has designated camp sites and 20 amp electrical outlets and water to each site. In May 2003 we saw an area that did get some flooding from heavy rains.
While the old camp was aging and the new camp is expanding, the hospitality has just stayed outstanding. We are very pleased with the food served. There was always a large variety every day. Everyone served themselves all they wanted which goes over well with the guests. You would have to look a long time to find anything that will match the meals.
