Elk Rock
State Park
Elk Rock State Park is located on Lake Red Rock south of Newton, Iowa at N41 o 24.040 – W93 o 5.050.  It only has 13 miles of trails but some of the views are great.  The park adjoins Corp of Engineers land that provides additional trails.  If the lake level is up very much the access to the Corp land is flooded.  There are about 25 electrical equestrian campsites that are not very large.  Any campfire in the electrical sites would be shared by up to four sites.  If you want to fish the lake has over 40 species of fish.  Also, if you are into morel mushrooms they have plenty when in season.  For the horses there are roomy tie stalls.  They  are partially covered but not designed to keep the rain off.  The campsites are frequently full on weekends.  This is especially true when the Knoxville Raceway has a special event.  It is located just a few miles south of the park.  In 2003 the DNR posted about 80 signs closing many unofficial trails.  This actually had a positive effect on the camping by discouraging the riders who abuse the privilege.
