Volga Iowa State Recreation Area – This one of the parks we ride regularly because it is a little over 60 miles from home.  The camp is located just a few miles from Fayette, IA at N42o  51.880 – W91o  45.480.  The camping is “primitive” but roomy.  The rangers are friendly and we are wondering how the budget cuts will impact the trails.  A new trail, Depot was added in 2003.  As with most of the Iowa trails they are dirt so they are a problem when wet.  The trails are wide and groomed.  They are ideal for the inexperienced rider or for those who want to tune-up their gated horses.  There are some beautiful views along the trails.  There is a nice combination of open prairie and wooded trails.  There just aren’t enough of them for more than a day or two of riding.  We usually mix up the way we ride them in order to introduce variety.
