Family of Joseph Hicks & Lavina Cole
The Family of Pioneer Settler Joseph Hicks/Hix
The Greenbrier settlement began on April 25, 1745 with two land grants totaling one hundred and fifty thousand acres. The Greenbrier Company was formed by John Lewis and sons William And Charles and they received  one hundred thousand acres . The stipulation was that they were to settle one family for each one thousand acres received and to seat them within 5 years. Greenbrier County was settled and twice the Indians massacred the settlers forcing them to flee their homes. In 1769 the first permanent settlement was made at the Big Levels reaching from Lewisburg to Renick.  The Little Levels ran from Hillsboro to Marlinton the present county seat of Pocahontas County named for Jacob Marlin who along with Stephen Sewell who both spent the winter of 1750.
Joseph Hicks/Hix - (William -Joseph) -Born 1735-1737 Hanover County Virginia - S/O William Hicks & Sarah Hanes/Haynes - He along with a presumed brother Christopher Hicks came to the Drapers Meadow settlement of Virginia 1755 - 1756 - Married Lavina/Melvina Cole the believed daughter of Richard & Lydia Cole.
Before we get into the family it's helps to understand them if one gets into their religion and the minister who married most of the children and several of the grandchildren.
November 14, 1781 - Greenbrier Baptist Church was was formed at the present site of Alderson. It was founded by the Rev. John Alderson Jr. son of a Baptist Preacher, John the 1st. The Sr. Alderson having came from England to New Jersey then on to Virginia. In 1775 John Jr. came to Greenbrier territory to search for a site to build his church. In 1777 He moved from Rockingham County Virginia and built a cabin where the present church sits at Alderson. Resentment for the Rev. John Jr. was so strong in the early days that he traveled with a bodyguard due to serious threats on his life.
