Baptist Beginnings Fayette County Virginia/ Now West Virginia
1.Baptist Beginnings in Fayette County - From Pages 209 - 210 History of Fayette County West Virginia 1993. --Soon after the American Revoluntion. Several Baptist families moved into the valley along the Kanawha River where it flows through Fayette County.
William and Daniel Huddleston were living at the mouth of Deepwater before 1785, when they moved across the river to Falls View. Their families are traced through Bedford, Buckingham, and Spottsylvania co's of Va.
Soon after David Jarrett moved to Alloy; previously associated with the Greenbrier Baptist Church.
John  Jenkins (brother-in-law to the Huddleston's), moved to Cotton Hill about 1796 as a Baptist.
These met along with others, for occasional preaching in their homes by John Alderson pastor of Greenbrier, and James Johnstone pastor of Linville Creek Baptist Church Rockingham Co. Va. They sometimes met at William Huddleston's, at David Jarrett's, and farther down the river at Paint Creek.
In 1794, Mr. Johnstone resigned his pastorate at Linville Creek and moved to Kanawha Co. He gathered Baptist families for preaching over a distance of more than 80 miles, from Peters Creek of Gauley to the mouth of Coal River. These he organized in 1796, assisted by John Alderson, nameing it Kanawha Baptist Church, From a branch of this church, the Gauley Bridge Baptist Church was formed in 1835,
(Note I will now skip over a bit of this)
Across New River on Gauley Mountain, some members of Greenbrier had made a settlement before 1800, among them were the Richard Hicks and Joseph Scaggs families, Davis Alderson and others who met in their homes for occasional preaching by John Alderson, by Josiah Osborne, pastor of Lewisburg, Edward Hughes, pastor of Peters Creek. For about 20 years they slowly increased in number.

Anstead Baptist Church  - Page 210 - The Anstead Baptist Church forefathers brought with them a great religious faith that shall never be forgotten. In 1790 the families of James Likens, Charles Scaggs, Terry McGraw, Hicks, Coleman, and Wood formed a settlement in this area. About 1800 they built a meeting house located on land which was later owned by William Tyree. This log meeting house was named Hopewell Baptist Church. To our understanding this was the 1st church of any denomination in Fayette County.(Note This article has more.)
