Welcome to the fifth annual Malibu Downwinder. With a 1:30 pm start time and a southeasterly course, we are hopeful of a fairly reliable 10-20 knot west wind to assist us in surfing the approximate 7 mile course. Last year the west wind showed up a liitle late and a few of the competitors, including myself, took advantage of some wind generated runners to move up a few places in the standings over the last mile or two. The sun was out for the BBQ and a few lucky raffle winners went home with a new Joe Bark surfboard and paddleboard as well some cool outfits for the summer courtesy of Honolua Surf Co. The race will start at Mugu State Beach, just north of Mugu Rock, and finish at Leo Carrillo State Beach at the north end of the North Beach parking lot. Awards, raffle and BBQ will be immediately following the race at the finish area. A limited number of campsites are available for Friday and Saturday night at Leo Carrillo State Park and Sycamore Cove State Park. Contact Gary Fortune if interested in camping at gfortune1@yahoo.com. All proceeds from this race will be donated to the Santa Monica Mts. Natural History Assoc. to help support the Leo Carrillo State Lifeguards and Junior Lifeguard program.
