A Short List of Titles and Authors

FICTION:

As the Sun Rises, Jose P. Leveriza: The final battles between the Spanish and the Filipino forces at the end of the 19th century.

Behind the Blue Canvas, Eileen R. Tabios: artists’ love stories.

A Blade of Fern, Edith L. Tiempo (National Artist): Set against the background of a little mining town in southern Philippines, the novel sketches a panoramic vista of rural life and problems of survival among miners prospecting for gold. The novel is in the tradition of the Romantic hero who runs away from a society he rejects to seek regeneration in a deeply natural environment.

Choice, stories by the late Cebu-born Lina Espina-Moore.

The Circular Firing Squad, Leonard Casper: This work present itself as a semi-documentary novella. Its main characters are inventions but not exaggerations. The performances by delegates from history involved with the Manila International Film Festival ’83 were prelude to the assassination of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino in August that year. In turn, revulsion at the grossness of his murder led to the opposition victiories I the 1984 elections, and to the peaceful EDSA revolution of 1986.

Dapitan Collection, Charito Ramirez: stories about families living in the Dapital St. area in Manila.

Each in His Own Fashion & Other Stories, Raissa Claire Rivera: The characters in these stories run a diverse gamut from sophisticated high school student, loveless college students, giddy newlyweds, a gay uncle and nephew, desperate job-seekers, to successful yuppies.

Ekklesiastika & Other Stories, Ester V. DaRoy

Ember Days & Other Tales & Stories, Ernesto S. Yee: Critics applaud the sure hand of this lawyer-pianist-author in whatever he writes.

Exactly Here, Exactly Now, Nadine L. Sarreal: This collection of 10 short stories (shortlisted, Manila Critics' Circle Award for Fiction) centers around survival in the moment—exactly here, exactly now. In different ways, the troubled characters face quiet forms of life-and-death matters. It is not only the big decisios that determine people’s fates, but also the moment-to-moment hanging on.

Golden Rain, Geraldine B. Korten: In this novel, a 99-year-old grandmother narrates the saga of her life, spanning 3 foreign occupations of the Philippines—the Spanish, American, and Japanese—up to the present. The story covers more than 8 decades, drawing an interesting sociological picture of the lives of middle-class Filipinos in a northern Luzon province. The narrations, mostly flashbacks, give glimpses of a mother’s relationships with her children and how she find resolutions of her life’s conflicts.

Green Sanctuary, Antonio Enriquez: First published by the University of Queensland Press (Australia) in 1981 as Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh. The late NVM Gonzalez provided the new title for this edition. South of the city of Cotabato in Mindanao lies the famed Liguasan Marsh. Strong antagonism is depicted between Christians and Muslims, as reflected by a Christian viewpoint.

Island Girl & Other Works, Dr. Cesar Martinez: this collection is the first published work of an opthalmologist. It grew out of a medical mission to a Visayan island, where he fell in love with a local school teacher. Unbeknownst to him, Colleen Magbanua is an unwilling member of a family of manananggals

Journey, Stories & Poems by Irah Borinaga: Whenever one journeys in the world today, one meets people with a certain aura that tells you they are kabayans—Filipinos living and working abroad. Each of them has a story to tell.

The Living and the Dead, Antonio Enriquez: WWII novel set in Mindanao.

The Manila I Knew, Amadis Ma. Guerrero; stories written between 197 to 1988; peopled with diverse characters against a backdrop of a nation in transition.

Nine Faces of Eve, Irah Borinaga; stories of nine different women, told with sensitivity and warmth.

The Noble Warriors, Wilhelmina Alcasid; a novella which portrays both soldiers and rebels alike as honorable men of war. The story takes place between the mid-‘70s through the early part of the 1990s. The ‘70s was the decade when young student activists disappeared underground to escape the tentacles of Martial Law. The 1980s through the 1990s was the era when they, young no more, reappeared with claws that marred the face of the past and incumbent administrations.

Notes of a Frigid Dormer, Natasha Vizcarra, who was editor of the Junior Inquirer before she left for the US for further studies. These tales deal largely with the coming of age of young women in the city and the provinces, and the frustrated rantings of a lowly dormitory refrigerator.

One, Tilting Leaves, Edith L. Tiempo; a philosophical noel by a noted writing teacher and National Artist for Literature.

Orbit 21, Jose Ma. Espino; For science fiction fans, this is a collection of 21 fantastic science fiction stories resurrected from oblivion after the first edition (Philippine Education Company) went out of print.

The Paraplegics, Edilberto K. Tiempo

Philippine American Short Stories, edited by the PALM COUNCIL; award-winning stories; collection of short stories written by young Filipino-American emerging writers, many of whom have gained recognition in their own right since.

Ragay, Jose P. Leveriza

The Scream of the Butterfly, Sean McGrath; a young man’s physical and spiritual journey through the initiations of adolescence; his quest for an anchoring love, its obsessions and betrayal, and his impetuous search for the “reasons why,” many in the wrong places.

Shifting Sands, Irah Borinaga; In the words of the author, “This is a story of people who reach for the higher ground, who stand as symbols of the goodness of man. This is based on a true story.

Suite Bergamasque, by Bobby F. Villasis; A collection of gay stories against the backdrop of conservative Dumaguete in the Philippines.

Tropical Temptations, Alfredo Kay

The Unseen War & Other Tales from Mindanao, Antonio Enriquez

The Voices from Sumisip, stories by Antonio Enriquez;
“No feeling is too slight, and no detail is too small to escape the eyes of this consummate storyteller…Apart from the skill with which he weaves his stories, Enriquez often becomes melancholy when describing the small, individual cruelties of ethnic misunderstanding or stupidity.” Jacob Wu, Asiaweek
“It is difficult to claim greatness of soul for any man until his life’s work is known, but there is a breadth of understanding, a depth of insight, a sensitivity and flexible creativity in the work of Antonio Enriquez that give his…sotries an intimation of greatness.” Elizabeth Perkins, Kabar Seberang

A Watch in the Night, Denis Murphy; a novel about religious people caught up in the martial law struggle against the Marcos regime. Denis Murphy has authored many collections of short stories. However, he confessed that this novel took him 25 years to complete.
