Grace Mnguni
Grace Mnguni
At the 1999 U.S. Conference on AIDS, held in Denver, Colorado, the producers of Global Focus Films met Grace Mnguni, a woman from South Africa who works on the frontlines of HIV/AIDS in Johannesburg and outlying areas. Grace, South Africa program director for the Association Francois-Xavier Bagnoud, a nongovernmental AIDS service organization, spoke in depth about the face of AIDS in her country. Issuing an urgent call for practical partnerships to be developed among local, national, and international public and private sectors, she courageously challenged those present to develop and implement strong and effective measures at the community level.
In addition, Grace encouraged policymakers, activists, and experts to bridge the cultural gap between traditional healers and biomedical professionals, to strengthen  outreach in rural areas, and to provide greatly needed resources for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Grace and her family opened their homes to Global Focus Films following the 13th Int'l AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, and provided us an intimate and up-close view of community efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
"I don't believe orphanage homes are the right answer," says Grace. "At the end of the day we will be left without a community. There will be no children left playing in the street. All the children will be institutionalized. We have to find a way as communities to keep these children in our homes. We are actually trying to encourage others to foster these children. Otherwise, what kind of community will we have? Children who grow up with no mothers or fathers, who don't know how to run and play in the rain? That is part of growing up."
The Association Francois-Xavier Bagnoud
The Association and Foundation Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (AFXB) have been assisting children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and advocating on their behalf for more than ten years. Its founder, Albina du Boisrouvray, states that "the world has been in denial about the disastrous spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Governments, businesses, and those of us in global civil society failed to appreciate the pandemic's enormous scale, its complex causes, and its catastrophic consequences."
