The Powder Springs Police Explorer program was in implemented 1986. It is for young men and women between the ages of 14-20 who have an interest in law enforcement and may be seeking a career in a related field. The Explorers meet on a monthly basis. They also participate twice a month as bailiffs in the Powder Springs Municipal Court, travel to various explorer competitions, and work numerous events throughout the community. The young people who join the Police Department's Explorer program gain valuable leadership skills while learning responsibility for others in their community. This is accomplished while having fun in a supportive atmosphere where self-discipline is encouraged. The Explorers are educated in law enforcement topics such as police ethics, traffic accident investigations, citation procedures, public relations, directing traffic, and maintaining crowd control. Explorers also patrol the Silver Comet Trail throughout the city. The Police Department also has an Explorer "Ride-Along" program that allows explorers to ride with an on-duty police officer which enables explorers to experience the challenges of law enforcement in greater depth. During special occasions, parades, and holiday events, the Explorers play a main role as additional support for the Police Department. Each Explorer has the opportunity to advance their rank through enthusiasm, attendance and overall participation in the program. They are also issued uniforms representing their post and the department.
