AN ENCOURAGING WORD

WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS

As relations between the thirteen original colonies and England
deteriorated and a conscious drift toward independence developed
in the later part of 1775, a committee met to consider the
proposition “that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to
be, free and independent.” The work of that committee was
consequential, and fifty-six stalwart colonists, nine of whom (John
Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Hewes, William Ellery,
William Hopper, Robert Treat Paine, Richard Stockton, George
Walton, and William Whipple) were Mason, signed the document
produced by that committee. That document, known as the
Declaration of Independence, broke colonial allegiance to Great
Britain and led to the establishment of a free and independent
nation known as the United States of America.

The heart of the Declaration of Independence is the clause, We
hold these truths. The truths the framers of that document held
were considered to be self-evident, that is, they were clearly
apparent and needed no proof. These truths became the solid
foundation of the new nation that came forth. They are:
• All men are created equal. There is no titled nobility as
in England and no dividing lines between classes
people.
• There is a Creator. The framers of that document
neither made an attempted to give a theological
interpretation of the Creator nor a scientific analysis of
the work of the Creator. They simply recognized the
existence 0f the Creator.
• The Creator endowed all people with certain
unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty
and the pursuit of Happiness.
• For these rights to be secure, Governments are
instituted among Men.
• When instituted, governments derive their just powers
from the consent of the governed.
• Governments can become destructive of the ends for
which they were established. When this happens, it is
the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to
institute new Government, laying its foundation on
such principles and organizing its powers in such form,
as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety
and Happiness.


As we observe Independence Day, we recognize that the
nation founded upon that solid foundation is know around
the world as the land of the free and the home of the brave,
and it has become a bastion of hope for all freedom-loving
people everywhere.
