A variety of spelling reinforcement activities are done throughout the year.  Students participate in word study activities that will enable them to see relationships, patterns, and structure in words.  Attention will be given to the list of third grade “no-excuse” spelling words that students use in their everyday writing. The “third grade spelling words” are a list of frequently used words by most third graders in their writing.  Spelling words are introduced through our Houghton Mifflin Anthology as well.   In addition, each individual student has a list of  “personal words” that is generated from each students own writing.  These are words that are not on the third grade list, but are used and misspelled frequently.  (For example, street, town, state names, color, number, days, and month names.) Our spelling curriculum allows students to apply spelling knowledge to written work.  Use of a thesaurus and dictionary skills are also emphasized.
