LIBERTY BELL WANDERERS
MAY 2008
From our President: Ron Nelson
Our first Regular Event of the year was held in Audubon and although the forecast was for rain we lucked out and had very good weather for the walk. We did have some rain on Friday evening that did cause some problems. First- Fred Reichert and I marked the trail on Friday afternoon and since most of the trail was on paved trails we used sidewalk chalk to mark the turns. Needless to say, the rain during the night washed all the arrows away and Fred had to redo all the chalk marks. The second problem from the rain was the creation of a section of the trail being converted from nice paved walkway to a muddy path with very slippery mud. Luckily everyone was careful and there were no reports of anyone falling. The start point at the Audubon Museum was nice and they even had a demonstration of raptors while we were there with Horned Owl, Red Tail Hawk, Screech Owl and falcon. To add additional worries, one week before the walk, they began construction of a large pavilion in the overflow parking lot which took away over 40 parking spaces. But everyone found a parking space. We had 79 walkers for the event and the only serious complaint I heard was that the 5K trail should have been rated a 3. Thanks to Fred Reichert for a nice trail and to the following workers that helped to make the day a success; Gene Maier, Joyce Deibert., Bill and Paul Missfeldt, Barbara Hannigan, Al and Ruth Kilburn, Linda Clark, Janet Nelson, Doris Simon, Marian Walsh, Carol Rautenstrauch and Dave and Joan Brown.
Our next walk will be on May 10 at Lorimer Park and we have a couple of nice surprises for you. First- there is a small pedestrian covered bridge near the start point.
While it is not an old original bridge, it was built (reconstructed) in 1997 as an Eagle Scout project and it does use the X-Truss design to accurately show the type of construction used in some covered bridges. Secondly- we have decided to have some food. It will be mainly hot dogs and Bratwurst as the entrée. Desserts will be cakes, cookies and other sweets donated by members. If you would like to donate something, please give me a call.
It is time to start thinking about possible walks for 2009. If you have suggestions please let Al Kilburn or I know.

We received a thank you note from Joan Lampart for the flowers sent on the death of her mother. Cards were sent to Betty Lou Eisold (death of Bill) and Janet Gruber (get well).

. The Wandering Wheels will bring a busload of walkers to do our Philadelphia walks on Tuesday, May 13. We’d like some of our walkers to accompany them. The Seneca Valley Sugarloafers will be coming on September 13.
