Therapeutic Massage is an ancient technique that promotes good health for your mind, body and spirit. As a graduate of The Baltimore School of Massage, I have had over 600 hours of training in therapeutic massage techniques, aromatherapy, shiatsu, and trained and attuned as a Reiki Master/Teacher.  I have been in practice since 1998. Generally, I practice a variety of techniques during a session, depending on the requests and activities of the client, and evaluation of their symptoms and medical history.
What a Massage Can Do
* Provide deep relaxation not only during the massage, but brings renewed energy and vitality for days afterwards. Reduces the physical, mental and emotional effects of stress.

* Reduce psychological feelings of tension and anxiety, as well as handle the physical tension we hold in our bodies, in our neck, shoulders, and back.

* Increase circulation of blood and lymph to the body, and facilitate the release of wastes and toxins. Excellent when recovering from illness.

* Lessens the risk of repetitive stress disorders by bringing body back to natural state. It brings your awareness to your areas of tension, which can assist you in retraining the muscles.

* Creates body awareness and health consciousness, and improves alertness and creativity

* Assist in managing pain in such conditions as arthritis, neuritis, neuralgia, fibromyalgia, whiplash, ischemia, sciatica, and general muscle tears, tension and strains.

* Can lessen discomfort during pregnancy, and assist in reducing pain during labor and delivery.

WHAT A THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE CANNOT DO:

* Massage cannot replace exercise in improvement of muscle tone, but it can deliver greater body awareness, support motivation for self-care, increase metabolism, and detoxify the lymphatic system.

* Massage cannot "cure" disease, but can facilitate healing and lessening of symptoms in conditions such as: TMJ * Migraine Headaches * Carpel Tunnel * Repetitive Stress Injuries * Tension Headaches * Sprains and Muscle Strains * Fybromyalgia * Past physical or emotional abuse * Cancer * AIDS * Arthritis * Sports Injuries * Foot problems * Digestive problems * Every day stiffness, aches and pains * Infertility

* Certified Massage Therapists are required to uphold a code of ethics, and any inappropriate behavior or comments will result in immediate termination of the session, and the full fee paid by the client.

EXAMPLES OF THE TECHNIQUES I MAY USE IN A SESSION ARE:

SWEDISH - Provides general relaxation with combination of long, slow strokes (effleurage), broad, lifting strokes (pettrisage), friction, vibration and tapotement (percussive strokes).

DEEP TISSUE - Used to reduce “knots” in tight and sore muscles. Can be worked with fingers, thumbs, and elbows. Great for those stress-induced knots in your back and shoulders, or your thighs after training for a run or a weekend of gardening.

SPORTS MASSAGE - Generally, a more vigorous Swedish massage for the athlete, but also can use compression, kneading and assisted stretching techniques when preparing for or coming off of an event.

NEUROMUSCULAR TECHNIQUE - uses deep tissue and stretching to retrain muscles in chronic tension patterns.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE - The fascia is a layer of tissue that surrounds all of your muscles, tendons & joints. One of the major causes of stiffness or soreness in muscles is hardening of the fascia covering. The muscles are manipulated by the therapist, mostly using a flat hand, with movements of the muscle performed by the client.

REFLEXOLOGY AND VITA-FLEX - follows the energy meridians on the feet, hands and ears. Essential oils applied to the feet can bring the therapeutic effects of the oils quickly to the corresponding areas of the body.

MASSAGE FOR THE FRAIL - During the recovery process, massage can help manipulate the lymph, and stimulate atrophied muscles. More importantly, it can bring a general feeling of well-being to anyone recovering from or assimilating to illness. Long, broad, light strokes are used. This type of massage is indicated for the elderly, those undergoing chemotherapy or other treatments, recovering from an accident, or prolonged bed confinement.

SHIATSU - Based in ancient Chinese 5 element theory, Shiatsu is an ancient technique using finger pressure and stretching techniques to open blockages in the energetic body.

AROMATHERAPY - incorporating essential oils in a therapeutic massage session to facilitate healing and relaxation on the physical, spritual and emotional planes.  Classes are also offered in using essential oils at home for your family's health care.

RAINDROP TECHNIQUE - using essential oils and massage primarily along the spine to reduce muscle spasms and eliminate toxins, bacteria and viruses. Very relaxing and clearing, the oils can work in the body for up to 7 days after the treatment.

REIKI - Reiki is a technique that channels “life energy" (chi)  for stress reduction that also promotes healing.  A treatment feels like a serene glowing radience that flows through you and envelops you.   Reiki has many beneficial effects including relaxation, alleviated physical discomfort, and feelings of peace, security and well being for both the practitioner and receiver.  Many have reported miraculous results affecting the body, emotions and spirit using Reiki techniques.  As an attuned Reiki Master, I teach classes in Reiki for personal enrichment and professional use. See classes page for more details.

HOT STONE THERAPY-a real treat for the body and spirit, the hot lava stones are used laid on the body and used in the strokes to provide a deeply relaxing deep tissue massage.
