Sheltie Information
1) Shelties like to be with their people they do not like to be left outside; If they are then they will bark.
2) I recommend that shelties be professionally groomed about once a month (We do own a grooming shop in Charleston WV). In between groomings it is your responsiblity to comb your dog out with the right equipment.
3) Teeth are a big deal with any dog. This is a very important item that must be kept up. If you do not take care of the dog's teeth then here are just some of the problems that can  happen:
    1) Heart mumers and other heart and ogan problems due to the plaque blocking blood flow and buliding up inside the veins or the artery.
     2) Smelly, Rotten and/ or    absesed teeth. Resulting in swelling, pain, and eventually the teeth have to be pulled out by a vet.
4) Please invest in a crate; this is not cruel as many people say it is. This is a safety measure and most dogs like their crates. Keep in mind that dogs are den animals and find safety and confort in their "bedroom". Plus if you have your dog crated while you are away you don't have to worry about the dog getting out, getting in to something, or making a mess.
5)I recommend getting a choke chain for your sheltie (over 6 months old). The reason for this is because with all the hair that shelites have it is extremly hard to correctly measure a collar.  The result or a poorly fitted collar is that shelties pull their head back and pop right out of their collar (they are masters at this). Also keep in mind that you should only be able to get 2 fingures under the collar.
6) Most shelties like to have some sort of work to do so training classes are a pretty good idea. Plus training gives the dog confidence and adds to the bond that you and the dog share.
7) Socialization is a very important part of raising a puppy into the dog that you want. This takes some work and may not always be fun but it is worth it.  Would you rather have a dog that is scared, spooky and shy of strangers or one that is confident and happy to have someone else to pet him?
