Information About The Prenatal Classes
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED?   It is not necessary to have any prior yoga experience; many students who join the class are doing yoga for the first time.  But the class is not just for beginners.  Many experienced yoga students find they like being in a class specifically geared to pregnant women.

HOW TO REGISTER: The prenatal yoga classes are ongoing and you may join at any time.  It’s not necessary to pre-register before coming to class, but I do prefer to have you call me before starting class so that we have a chance to talk—(407-644-3288).  Please try to arrive about ten minutes early for your first class so that you have a chance to ask questions and get settled before class starts.

COST:   Classes cost $14 if you pay by the class.  You can also buy a card for 4 classes, which is $44.  The card has a two month expiration and can be used for any of the classes.  I also offer a card for 8 classes, which is $80.  It has a three month expiration and can be used for any of the classes.  I accept cash, checks and MC/VISA.

DRESS:       Dress in comfortable clothes that you can easily move and stretch in.  Clothing shouldn’t be too tight or so big that it will get in your way.  Most students wear shorts and a t-shirt or stretchy work-out clothes.  We do yoga in bare feet, so you don’t need any special shoes.

WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS:   If you have a yoga sticky mat, please bring it to class.  I have mats that can be used if you don’t have one.  You may want to bring your own water, although there is a water cooler at the yoga studio.

WHAT IS A CLASS LIKE?   In class we work on breathing and relaxation techniques as well as stretches and yoga poses.  Poses are included to help increase flexibility and build strength.  We talk about everyday posture and how to use yoga to help relieve some common discomforts of pregnancy.  We also practice postures that may be helpful to use during labor.  There is time during each class for students to share concerns and ask questions about pregnancy and childbirth.  Other students are often a great source for ideas and suggestions.  I provide handouts about topics of interest during pregnancy along with information about local resources such as doulas and childbirth classes.

PRECAUTIONS:   All of the postures and stretches we do in class are safe to do during pregnancy, but each pregnancy is unique, so it is always a good idea to check with your prenatal caregiver to see if there are any concerns or restrictions for you.  I suggest that you have a light snack about an hour before class.  This helps to prevent dizziness from low blood sugar during class.

SPOUSES/PARTNERS:  Expectant dads are often curious and interested in pregnancy yoga and women sometimes ask about having their partner or other friends come to class with them.  Because I want all of my students to feel comfortable in talking about their pregnancies, I have found it best to have the class be a special time just for expecting mothers.  In the future, I’m hoping to be able to have a prenatal partner class that meets once a month or every other month where couples can learn some yoga to do together.
