Information About The Postnatal Classes
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED?   No prior yoga experience is needed to begin yoga after pregnancy with your baby.  Even if you didn’t discover yoga during pregnancy, you will find it to be a wonderful way to begin moving, stretching, and getting back in shape after giving birth.  Experienced yoga students find this class a gentle way to begin resuming their pre-pregnancy yoga practice, with the added bonus that you can bring your baby to this class.

WHEN SHOULD I BEGIN AND FOR HOW LONG SHOULD I ATTEND?  Most moms and babies find they are ready to begin coming to class about six weeks after birth.  If you’ve had an uncomplicated, vaginal birth you may feel ready to start sooner, but remember that plenty of rest in the first few weeks is important, so don’t push yourself into doing too much too soon.  After a cesarean birth, you should wait until you see your doctor for your postpartum exam (usually at six weeks) and receive the O.K. to begin exercising.  You and your baby can attend the Mom & Baby class until your baby starts actively crawling, so it’s fine to join the class even if your baby is already several months old.

HOW TO REGISTER:  The class is ongoing, so you can join at anytime.  There is no preregistration required, but it is helpful if you call me before coming to class the first time.  (407-644-3288)

COST:  The class is $14 if you pay by the class.  You can buy a card for 4 classes, which is $44.  It has a two month expiration.  You can also buy a card for 8 classes, costing $80, which has a three month expiration.

DRESS:  You and your baby should both wear comfortable clothing that you can easily stretch and move in.  Make sure that your baby is dressed so that you can easily uncover his/her feet.

WHAT TO BRING TO CLASS:  If you have your own yoga sticky mat, you can bring that with you.  I have mats available to borrow.  You’ll also need a comforter or blanket for your baby to lie on.  Some students also bring in car seats for their babies to sit in while the moms are doing yoga.  Depending on your baby’s age, you may also need to bring some toys to keep your baby entertained and happy.

WHAT IS A CLASS LIKE?  This is a very relaxed class.  The structure varies from week to week depending on the needs of the students, how old the babies are, and whether we have lots of happy babies or lots of fussy babies.  We begin class with breathing and centering to help everyone feel focused and present.  We then have a short time for each mother to introduce herself and her baby and to let us know how they are doing.  This is a great time to ask questions and share ideas with other parents.  Then there are yoga postures and stretches for the moms and sometime during class, about ten or fifteen minutes of massage and yoga for the babies.  We end class with a quiet relaxation time, so that you hopefully leave feeling energized and refreshed.  Don’t worry that your baby might cry in class.  All the babies do at some time or another and no one minds.  And sometimes a baby sleeps through the whole class and that’s okay too.   Yoga is about flexibility and in this class we really get to practice that!  The class lasts about an hour, but some moms stay longer to feed their babies and talk.

BABIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:  Yoga can be very therapeutic for a child with special needs.  This class could be a good way to start learning about some yoga techniques that can help your child’s development.  I am a certified Yoga for the Special Child teacher, so I can help and your baby in class or in private sessions.  You can call me to see what would best meet your needs.
