The Portage Lake Lodge Experience
Sunkhaze Outfitters North is a guide service based out of Portage Lake, Maine. Portage Lake is in Aroostook County, Maine's northernmost county. This small town of 500 people is situated 40 miles south of New Brunswick and 60 miles east of Quebec.
This is the heart of native brook trout country in the "crown of Maine". The "County" abounds with lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, many of which are behind North Maine Woods gates. The opportunities for fishing, canoeing and photography are practically endless. Most destinations are within a 30 mile radius of town.
The fall season is noted for its big game hunting for bear, moose and deer. There are hundreds of thousands of acres of industrial woodlands available to the hunter west and east of Portage Lake. The area is very popular with sportsmen who want the "big woods" experience. There is also ample opportunity for grouse hunting, fall fishing for brook trout and leaf peeping before the snow flies.
Snow is typically on the ground from mid-December to mid-April. Ice fishing for brook trout, togue and salmon is popular, as is snowmobiling. Hound hunts for snowshoe hare and coyote hunting over bait round out the winter activity.
Ice-out is typically around the end of April to the first part of May. Spring fishing, fiddleheading and caneoing usher in the start of the open water season.
The lodge is a 3 bedroom log cabin with a spacious covered porch. It is fully furnished and has 1 bathroom with a shower. There is also cable t.v./v.c.r., a propane fireplace and a full kitchen with a microwave. Portage Lake is just 400' away!
