About the Photographer
Greg Kiser is a semi-professional photographer based in his hometown of Winston-Salem, NC, however, he has not always been a photographer. Never having much interest in the arts, Greg focused on other things as he grew up. Military history was a major interest of his through his school years. There was even a time he considered serving his country in the armed forces. However, that never did materialize. Instead, he attended Appalachian State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice in 1996.
It was in 1999 that Greg started his career as a law enforcement officer with a local municipality. What he thought was going to be fulfilling, left him empty inside and was showing him the worst possible side of society. Knowing that the career path that he had chosen could have some serious ramifications to his psyche, Greg decided to look for a hobby where he could mentally get away for a while.
Having always had an interest in the rolling landscape of the Appalachian Mountains, he decided that photography might be a good hobby to start. Having very little knowledge about photography didn't stop Greg from reading everything that he could on the subject. In addition to discovering that photography was just what he needed to combat the stress of his profession, he found that other people enjoyed looking at his pictures.
In the early months of 2005, Greg took this new hobby to the next step. A new "prosumer" camera was purchased and a web page was developed so he could share some of his photographs very easily. Within just a couple of months, Greg sold his first print and Four Forty-Six Photography was born. The web page grew rapidly over the next year into an actual web based gallery. More prints were sold, and limited edition prints were added to the collection. In the summer of 2006 Greg completely rebuilt the gallery into what you are visiting now.
To this day, Greg is completely self taught when it comes to photography. He has spent long hours reading books, magazines, and different sources on the internet. The works of Mark Lucock, John Shaw, and Ansel Adams provide the direction for this self-education. While Greg experiments with different photographic subjects from time to time, he finds his favorite subjects in the realm of landscapes...both grand and intimate.
Greg compares his photographic experiences to that of a painter. When he is in the field composing a picture in the viewfinder, his mind becomes totally consumed in the process. Much like a painter moving his brush over the canvas, Greg composes an image that shows what his mind sees. For that brief period of time, nothing else matters. It is just the photographer, the camera, and nature.
If you enjoy viewing the web based galleries of Four Forty-Six Photography, you will be happy to know that Greg's photographs can also be viewed at the Dan River Art Market in Danbury, NC. This is a place where you will find many regional artists and craftmen featured. He keeps a handful of his framed photography onsite and ready for sale. If you happen to be in the area be sure and stop by.
Shooting digital with a film state of mind is an ideal that Greg has held near and dear to his heart since the beginning. In this current age of digital photography, it is often hard to tell what is real and what is manufactured. Greg chooses to rely on his photographic technique, and equipment in the field to achieve the final look of his photographs. Serious post processing is just not an option for the final image. Nature is perfect in its imperfection.
Thank you for visiting the galleries of Four Forty-Six Photography.
