CAMP MERZ SUMMER CAMP 2005
CAMP MERZ IS LOCATED IN NEW YORK
HOME OF THE "CHEESE MOOSE!"
2006 SUMMER CAMP
"MERZ SURVIVOR"
Niles Boy Scout Troop 31 allows the Scouts to choose the summer camp of their choice.  For the past 6 years they have chosen CAMP MERZ, which is located on Lake Chautauqua, in New York!       The summer camp is a week long event. Sometimes we go for two weeks in a row, which is called:
 "Twice is Nice!"

On Wednesday, the Scouts go on an Outpost. They hike up a large hill and sleep under the stars. They have a bonfire where they enjoy skits and songs.  New Scouts are introduced to Scouting by "Polaris." Specific camp guides stay with this group of Scouts and teach them the basics of fire safety, knife safety, knots and much more!  The Camp offers a family night, where you get to come see the camp and your Scout in action!  Have dinner and enjoy a bonfire with skits, songs and FUN!
CAMP MERZ OFFERS MANY MERIT BADGES, SUCH AS:
Scuba diving, Canoeing, Motorboats, Swimming, Shotgun, Rifle, Archery, Reptile study, Emergency Prepardness, Indian Lore, Camping, Cooking, Metalwork's, Art, Hiking, Orienteering and MORE!

July 9-14   SUMMER WEEK-LONG CAMP AT MERZ IN N.Y.
July 9th  TROOP 31 LEFT OHIO AT 1PM AND ARRIVED AT 4:15PM!
Justyn & Hammer passed their swimming test! Eddie left his shirt on, and passed the swimming test as well, yet a little tired. Ryan "flew" through the swimming test and passed! Those 4 Scouts are considered "Swimmers" therefore, they are able to attend any water activity with the Troop, such as White Water Rafting or Canoeing. Dallas was classified a "Beginner" swimmer and must pass the swim test. Jeff, a new Boy Scout, panicked a bit- and is considered a non-swimmer. This did not keep his spirit down, for he stated he is going back to try again! Good going Jeff! The boys enjoyed a welcome bon-fire and turn in for the night. Weather: is clear and crisp. Lake: slightly choppy.  Thanks and good night to our Scouts in New York. We miss you!

July 10th  They are surviving!! Jeff & Ryan-new Scouts are learning basketry & Indian Lore and their basics. Jeff is having a great time, no homesickness as of yet! The Troop did poorly on their morning inspections and will work on that for July 11th. They all participated in Polar Bear-getting into the Lake first thing in the morning-BRR! They had fun and will do it all week, we receive an award for their "cooling" efforts! It gives them extra points to the castaways in our Troop. LEADERS: Made a long cabin, with a porch, roped off railing and surrounded by tiki torches-they are keeping the "Survivor Spirits Up!" Plus, the night owls that watch over the Scouts, took a mid-day Siesta nap, much needed! They also won the "Skeet Shoot Out" against the Staff! Great aim guys! (Poor Jay! Wax on Wax off-giggles! Jay is from our Troop and is remaining at Camp for 8 weeks as Staff. He has a bet with our Leaders vs. Staff games!) Leaders try the Tomahawk Throw tom. good luck! Tonight they had water carnival-made a raft out of lumber and rope, Dallas and another Team member floated! Water Activites were sandwich eating-gets a lil' mushy, under/over, greased watermelon and more! Order of the Arrow tap out is tom. at noon, keep posted to see whom from our Troop gets "tapped out," and becomes part of the Elite OA! Weather: Had an emergency test due to weather, all was well, calm now and at water carnival. Lake: Glassy Food: Moose said the lunch and dinners were good, so there is my point! Good night Scouts, & Keep Surviving Niles Troop 31!

July 11th  I arrived at camp with a warm welcome! The boys are busy working on Merit Badges and their camp looks great! They made a bowling alley and a golfing game in site. They received 47 points out of 48 on their clean site. Justyn ate sardines wrapped in seaweed, soaked in clam juice, covered in raspberry sauce for immunity challenge! The Leaders lost the Tomahawks, which makes me wonder-when do Scouts practice throwing these things?!  Weather: AM foggy, Noon raining on and off. Don't worry, we will hand out PFD's if it rains too much! Lake: Chilly & choppy. Food: Moose is not losing weight.

July 12th Wet & Wild Wednesday! All our Scouts have squirt guns and I am dripping wet. They are having a great time at camp-no homesickness! Tonight they will attend an outpost. Each Scout leaves camp with their gear, hikes up a large hill and camps out of site. This gives the Leaders a break and a time of reflection for the Scouts. When you have your cup of coffee in the morning, remember our Polar Bear Crew in waters of 68 degrees at 6:30 AM. BRR! Eddie drank a cup full of (I won't say) for immunity. Jeff is now a beginner swimmer! He is trying to pass his swimming test to become a swimmer-good job! OA could not be performed, therefore, we will announce OA members at the Reunion. *Special Note* Our hearts and prayers go out to Jay Kuester's family. The Troop will be leaving early on Friday to attend calling hours for Jay's father.
May the Greatest Scoutmaster of all Scouts, be with Jay, until his Troop meets with him again.
